Show Presorted Standard U.S. Postage PAID Permit No. 11 Gunnison, UT ECRWSS Volume 4 • Number 47 On November 14, 2008, Gunnison’s Casino Star Theatre opened its doors to moviegoers exactly two days short of a full calendar year after the toxic plume from Top Stop’s 23,000-gallon leak forced it to close. The closer it came, the one-year anniversary became “the date to beat” for Directors Lori Nay and Diana Spencer. And with some extraordinary assistance from Rocky Mountain Power, Questar and Zions Bank, and long hours of dedicated hard work by Paulsen Construction, Peterson Refrigeration and Mechanical, and KGM Electric, the doors opened as scheduled. Over one hundred visitors attended the afternoon open house, during which they were treated to a tour of the facility, including a look at the massive climate-control system, which was turned on for the first time Wednesday afternoon after Rocky Mountain Power completed the new service entry. Thursday, Sanpete County Building Inspector Tracy Christensen inspected and approved the electrical and mechanical systems—as well as handrails, fire-retardant curtains, and exit routes—and approved the building for occupancy. Especially important, Thursday, November 20, 2008 hydrogeologist Lance Hess of Remedy, Inc., placed a device in the basement Wednesday night that would detect any evidence of toxic fumes. Thursday, he transported it to a chemical laboratory for analysis. The results of the chemical analysis arrived by text message on Friday, during the open house. No traces of toxic fumes were detected with the new system in operation, even though a similar test showed positive only two weeks earlier. In the meantime, tickets for “Twilight at Midnight,” the November 20 midnight showing of the highly anticipated movie Twilight, sold out within two days. Because of the demand, the Casino Star management is selling advance tickets to the Friday showings at 5:00, 7:15 and 9:30 p.m. Advance tickets only for Friday, November 21 may be purchased at the box office during regular box office hours, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Orders of five or more adult tickets may be purchased with a credit card by telephone at 435-9792798 or 435-979-9235. The Casino Star Theatre welcomes you back! They want to be your first choice in movie entertainment. Copy Price • 75 cents Mark Henline/GVG Top: Movie goers line up for the 7:00 show on opening night. The display started with 30 flags and has now grown to 102. The flags are the ones that have covered the caskets of veterans at the time of burial over the years. They were donated to the Legion for their display. Over the years these flags have become stretched and worn and so the Legion is going to replace them with new 4x6 nylon flags. The Legion would like to make every effort to return the flags to those who have donated them. In many cases those who have made the donation have passed away. If you have a loved one, such as a father, brother, uncle or cousin who has passed on, please contact the Legion to see if they are on the list. Storage is a concern and the Legion would like to return the flags as soon as possible. If you have any questions please call Richard Jensen at 528-7909, Newell Pickett at 528-7977 or Mark Pickett at 528-7781. The students and faculty at Gunnison Valley Middle School kicked off their annual Food Drive Tuesday morning. The drive will go until Wednesday November 26. Students are encouraged to bring canned and boxed foods (home canned food products will not be accepted at the Food Bank) to school to help with this worthy project. The Food Bank is grateful for all food received, but there is a special need this year for items such as peanut butter, tuna fish and canned meat products. The faculty and the individual grades will be competing to see who can collect the most food.
