Show 20,2006 Thursday, The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 6 The Scouting News! By MICHAEL OLIVER Last week, Varsity scouts from Orem to Gunnison participated in the Varsity On-Belay course. Varsity On-Belay began on Monday July 10th at Maple Canyon. At Maple Canyon, scouts enjoyed many activities including rock climbing and repelling. Monday's activities were followed by a world famous campfire put on by the Varsity On-Belay staff. After a short bus ride from Maple Canyon to Fairview Canyon, Tuesday was spent with aa 1 1 mile bike ride from Huntington Reservoir to Potters Ponds. That night the rain put shelters made by the participants to the test. Wednesday morning all six squa'ds of five to six scouts went on a wilderness survival hike. During the hike everyone learned which plants are edible and poisonous. When each squad reached their point on the hike they learned how to use signal mirrors by signaling the other squads. Once back at camp the afternoon was filled by building, testing, and racing milk jug rafts. That night t another campfire was put on by the participants. On Thursday everyone biked back to Huntington for the last two days but before the bike ride the camp did a service project at Potters. The service included flushing out the toilets, cleaning trash around the ponds, pulling many logs out of the ponds, and filling in holes on the road. Thursday night the participants went on their outposts. Friday afternoon is all about the San Pitch Gauntlet it includes mountain biking with stations like canoeing, rifle shocking, and archery. The Gauntlet is like a mini Sanpete Challenge. A patriotic campfire and commitment trail on Friday night was a great highlight for the course. We finished the course with a hike from Huntington to the beginning of Skyline Drive where we had final assembly. At Varsity On-Beiay, you can earn your climbing and wilderness survival merit badges. You can also earn the cycling varsity activity pin. Varsity On-Belay is an amazing course that is full of fun and creates great memories. Members of the Varsity On-Belay staff and committee included Sam Judd, Mitchel Anderson, Brandon Jensen, Michael Oliver, Jeff Oliver, Curtis Anderson, Dwight Inouye, and Matt Reber. Participants from Gunnison included Heston Neal, Kasey Yardley, Alan Boore, Ben Boore, Colton Christiansen, Tyrell Hansen, Tyler Jensen, Jimmy Thomas, Guss Davis, and Chris Jensen.
