Show Opinions 20, 2006 Thursday, The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 2 Somewhere in Utah The boys overseas Just A Thought By MARK HENLINE One of the things that Jodi and I have always liked to do is take road trips. When we were newlyweds we worked different schedules and our only common day off was Thursday. So as often as we could, we would get in our car and go on Thursday road trips. Often times we wouldn't even have a destination, we would just start driving and end up where we would end up. Our car was a little Chevy Sprint that got 45 miles to the gallon so we could go a long way for very little money. . It was on one of these road trips that we really fell in love with Sanpete County. We traveled down highway 89 and stopped in Manti to take pictures of the temple. After leaving the temple we got a room in the hotel. That evening we went to dinner at Fat Jacks in Ephraim then went to the movie, "Dances with Wolves" at the *Town Theatre. As I sat in the theatre I really started thinking how I would love to move to Sanpete. The next day we drove through Sterling and stopped in Gunnison where I applied to work as a meat cutter at Gunnison Market. But unfortunately they weren't hiring at the time. It wasn't until a road trip a couple years later that I walked into Manti Grocery and they hired me on the spot. Two weeks later we were living in Sanpete County. Anyway, back to the topic of road trips. Utah has so many things to see and places to visit. I love driving down highway 89 near Brigham City and seeing all the fruit stands. Or driving around Flaming Gorge or better yet taking a boat through some of it's canyons and gorges. Then there's Park City's historic Main Street with it's great restaurants, shops, and numerous art galleries. There's so much to see and do there. Or how about St. George in the winter time. Who doesn't like leaving the cold for. a while to spend a few days in the warm comfortable weather. I truly love Utah and think it has so much to offer. It is with this in mind that we will start a new weekly feature called "Somewhere in Utah." Each week we will highlight somewhere or something of interest in our great state. With the whole state as our canvas, we can highlight mountains, deserts, lakes, small towns, big cities, restaurants, museums, pageants, celebrations and on and on. I'm really excited about this new weekly feature and think it will add value to the Gazette. I truly hope that it will be something for us all to look forward to. Club News By HARRIET BAUMGARTNER Our ladies were very pleased to have a surprise guest speaker last week. Elvars nephew just came back from Iraq and he told us how the war is going over there. He said it's terribly hot and it doesn't' rain. The wind blows and you have sand in your ears all the time. He said the most common things that gets people hurt or killed is driving along somewhere and then a bomb blows up right next to you. He joined the national guard in 1994 and said he didn't expect to travel out of the U.S., but it didn't work out that way. He said that now that he's home he has Caregiver Workshop The Gunnison Valley Lion's Club would like to express their appreciation and thanks to all those who contributed to the success of the 4th of July celebration in Gunnison. Advertise in tbe Service Directory Sanpete County Commission been watching the news and learning a lot of stuff that never showed up in the Stars and Stripes, that's the newspaper the service boys read all the time. He said he was surprised to see a whole bunch of generals who had run the show over there saying the secretary of defense should be fired. He said he was in Baghdad one time and met the man in a chow hall (that's where they eat) and he said he wasn't too impressed. He said he expects the boys will be coming home pretty 'soon because the election is coming this fall and the politicians want to look like good, smart people, who should be sent back to Washington for several more years. Edith asked him if we're winning* the war and he told us that the people over there are sort of crazy with their religious ideas, and he wonders if it will change a lot in the long run. When he finished, we presented him with some new tricot pillow cases that Dora had worked on. She stitched some eagles with arrows and did such a nice job. He was very appreciative and after he left there was a motion that we write to the president to ask him if he hasfiguredout how to get the boys home. LaRue said there doesn't seem to be as much enthusiasm to end the war as there was to start it. Hazel said she was watching CNN the other day and they said that the government has shut down the group looking for that Bin Laden guy who blew up all the buildings a few years ago. Several of the ladies said she didn't hear the news right and so we checked with Edgar and he said Hazel heard it right. That doesn't make much sense, but surely the government knows what's best for all of us. We have decided to try to make it to Nephi for the parade. We don't want to go to any rodeo but if there's time, we'll come back down through the county to what's new in the north end. Elda opposes that idea because it stinks in Moroni with all those turkeys.
