Show Wednesday, October 10, 2007 A13 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition Long ride seeks to raise big cash for assortment of good causes By Sara Hansen Staff writer SARA HANSEN / MESSENGER PHOTO A.J. Rowell is undertaking a 10,000-mile bike trip to raise money for charities and passed through Sanpete last week. Going the extra mile would be quite the understatement in regard to a North Carolina native’s goal to help the world around him. A.J. Rowell began a 10,000mile odyssey—which will take him through three Canadian provinces, 13 states and 22 national parks—last June in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and will end in his hometown of Gullowhee, N.C. Rowell says he is going on this journey to raise $24,000 total for an assortment of charities. Sanpete County was right on Rowell’s chosen path. Rowell said it was a little bit of a shock to come through Sanpete after being in the Salt Lake and Provo area. “I was shocked. Once I left Spanish Fork there was nothing.” Utah State University – Ephraim POSTMASTERS EXCITEMENT T! While stopping in Fairview he met Marie and Richard Olsen. The Olsens were awesome, Rowell said. He and his current riding partner Marie Maruskove from Prague, Czech Republic pulled up to Fred and Audrey’s, and the Olsens automatically invited Rowell and Maruskove to their home to swap stories. After spending the night camped behind Fred and Audrey’s, Rowell and Maruskove were on their way again, absorbing the wonders of rural America. “Small town America is where it is at. That’s where you see what America is really about,” Rowell said. The inspiration for the trip came from observing the growing gaps in the American social structure while he was working in the corporate world in Atlanta, Ga., said Rowell. In his searching to square away the injustices Rowell was seeing, he happened upon making long distance bike tours, which quickly became a hobby. After completing a bike tour across the United States, Rowell said he had the epiphany of how he could make a difference doing something he loved. The bike tours were a natural course, said Rowell, because he had spent his youth mountain biking. “I always loved biking. When I turned 16 and all my friends were cashing in their bikes for cars I just kept riding,” Rowell said. His passion for riding continued, and he raced mountain bikes in college. “People love adventures and love to see people struggle through them,” Rowell said. With this in mind Rowell made his decision to bike on his chosen route to draw attention to charities that could make a difference for people all over the world. “All people have to do is go to my website [whyiride.org] and there are links to the charities right there,” Rowell said. All of the charities are 98-100 percent proficient, which means 98-100 percent of the money donated goes to the cause, not the charities’ administrators, Rowell said. Besides providing a place for people to donate to worthy causes, Rowell said, people can also subscribe to his newsletter to see how his adventure is progressing and have access to other updates and information on his website. The stories are usually quite interesting, Rowell said, especially because he carries all of his supplies for the trip on his bicycle. The bike weighs close to 100 pounds. The majority of that is food and water, Rowell said.
