Show Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Sanpete County NEWS•BRIEFS COUNTYWIDE INTEREST Permits available for Christmas trees By Kirsten Reimschiissel FILLMORE— With the holiday season approaching, it’s time to start scouting out the perfect Christmas tree. Beginning Nov. 13, the Bureau of Land, Fillmore Field Office will offer 75 permits to the Keg Mountain area and 25 to the Mountain Home area. On account of the Stewardship Program, permits will not be given to the Tintic and Eureka areas. Permits and are given on a first-come, first-served basis (one permit per family). These can be purchased for $5 at the field office at 35 E. 500 North. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.4 p.m. For more information, call (435) 743-3100. With a permit, individuals may cut a pinon or juniper tree from the designated areas. Once cut, the permits must stay attached to the tree at all times, and trees may not be resold. EPHRAIM Snow to host Homecoming concert By Kirsten Reimschiissel EPHRAIM—The annual Snow College Homecoming Gala Concert will be held in the Jorgensen Concert Hall of the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Snow College Horne School of Music will perform, featuring the Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble I, the Double Woodwind Quintet, A’ Capella, and Cadence. In addition, Nadine and Richard Nibley, Ephraim, will be honored guests for their support of the music department and community orchestra along with Caleb Chapman, director of “The Music School” in American Fork, for his service to the youth music program. City Council passes resolution against smoking EPHRAIM—The Ephraim City Council has passed a resolution declaring city parks, cemeteries, recreation areas and “other cityowned property during city-sponsored events” to be smoke-free. But the council decided to stop short of passing an ordinance, which could have included fines and penalties for smoking at such locations. City Manager Richard Anderson said the resolution, passed unanimously at the Wednesday, Oct. 3 council meeting, gives the city staff authority to post no-smoking signs. And, he said, if a police officer saw someone smoking in a posted location, the officer could ask the person to stop. But Anderson said the city has no plans at present to designate any smoking areas. Sanpete County Snow trustees reorganize By John Hales EPHRAIM—The Snow College Board of Trustees has reorganized itself, giving several members new assignments. At a meeting of the trustees on Oct. 2, the body elected new officers when former Chair John Willmore said he felt it inappropriate for him to remain as the head of the body since he is a brother-inlaw to new Snow president, Scott Wyatt. The trustees accepted his resignation as chairman, and elected Eddie Cox as the new chair. Thoressa Alder became the new vice chairman. In other trustee appointments, Dan Jorgensen agreed to remain chair of the board’s audit committee, but only on the proviso that Wyatt seek an internal auditor for the college, which Wyatt said was one of his priorities as president. Tim Blackham was appointed as the trustees’ representative to the Applied Technology Advisory Committee. Trustee Carl Albrecht also sits on that committee, but as an industry representative, not a trustee. FAYETTE FRIDAY, OCT. 12 Youth unhurt in rollover accident By John Hales A juvenile whose name has not been disclosed is unhurt following a rollover accident in Fayette last weekend. According to Sanpete County Sheriff’s Office information and Deputy Chad Nielsen, a boy was driving a vehicle in Fayette around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. At about 300 South and 100 East, the vehicle went out of control and rolled over, said Nielsen. No other vehicles were involved. “He was lucky. The vehicle rolled three times, but he wasn’t injured,” Nielsen said. Nielsen did not give the name or age of the boy involved, but said he was young enough that “he didn’t even have a license, not even close.” GUNNISON GUNNISON—Los Hermanos de los Andes will entertain audiences with their sounds from South and Central America on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Casino Star Theatre, 78 S. Main St., Gunnison. According to Diana Spencer of the Casino Star Theatre Foundation, “Their infectious style features panpipes, whistles, stringed instruments and drums, and ranges from the hand-clapping and footstomping Carnaval de los Pepinos to the haunting and soaring El Condor Pasa.” Prior to the night of the performance, tickets will be available at the Sanpete Messenger office in Manti and Rasmussen’s Ace Hardware in Gunnison. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the performance. Suggested donation is $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and students. Lecture offered on timber framing Joey Paulsen will be the guest speaker for the free TBSI lecture series, “Preservation Matters.” Paulsen has over 17 years of timber framing experience and has worked on some of the largest and most intricate timber frame projects in the nation. The lecture starts at 6 p.m. in the TBSI lab at 350 W. College Avenue, Ephraim. For more information call 2837572. Golf tournament scheduled Palisade State Park Golf Course in Sterling is hosting a 27hole golf tournament with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. The format is nine holes best ball, nine holes scramble, and nine holes alternate shot. The $60 entry fee includes a golf cart and lunch. Sign up by Friday by calling the golf shop at 835-4653. The Snow College Convocation, at 12:30 p.m. in the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts, will feature the Andean musical group, Los Hermanos de los Andes, in collaboration with the Casino Star Theatre Foundation.
