Their youngest, 9-year-old Nathan, won the national mileage award for the AERC’s junior division. And Nalisa, the one-time novice, has now won more races than anybody else in the family. The Bradleys haven’t slowed down, but they have changed their focus a little. They are currently running a junior apprenticeship program for others interested in endurance racing. One of the first to take them up was the Knudson family of Ephraim. Sean Knudson is serving in Iraq, but his wife, Mandy and her daughter, Emily, 9, and son, Braden, 7, hope to participate in their first 25-mile race in Moab, in November. Meanwhile, 9-year-old Nathan is set to run his first 100-mile race. The Bradley’s motto is, “Work like it’s up to you, and pray like it’s up to the Lord.” bw had added another 15 miles, which bumped it up to a 65-mile ride. I told my kids, ‘you have a choice. Here we have a chance to get another 15 miles per rider.’” Says Nalisa, “Our oldest daughter, Tricia, would tell us, ‘I’ll finish the 50 miles but that’s it.’ But when it came time to decide, she said, ‘My horse is still good. I’m going on.’ The trail wasn’t marked for night riding because they didn’t expect anybody to take it. We had to shine the light from our cell phones at each intersection to find hoof prints so we would know which way to go.” Adds Terry, “There were 15 or 20 other riders out of about 40 who had planned on elevating, but only one followed through besides the six of us. We finished at about 10:30 that night.” Terry emphasizes that his children always have a choice of whether to participate in a race. “They have to clean the corral,” he says. “They don’t have to compete. On some of these 100mile rides, you’re going for 24 hours, through heat, rain or snow. But when you finish, you have the pride of accomplishment.” Tvsf!zpv!dpvme!hspx!fyusb!ibjs/!Cvu!b!xfmm. uvofe!gvsobdf!jt!nvdi!npsf!buusbdujwf/ Call 800-986-6440 for appointment 9/5,12MG Sanpete Business Owners! This award is achievable.’” And so they set out to achieve it. But it was hard work. “The Soldier Hollow ride (near Park City) was extremely tough,” says Terry. “It was about 100 degrees. We got up at 5:30 and started riding at seven in the morning. We had until seven that evening to complete it. Four of my kids had done very well.” Tylek’s horse bruised her hoof on the rocky trail and had to be pulled from the race. Delirious with heatstroke, Terry led the two daughters five miles out of their way. Arriving at the finish line just minutes before the deadline, exhausted, the family debated whether to push their luck. “On certain rides, you’re allowed to ‘elevate’ to a higher mileage,” says Terry, his voice perversely level, ”which means if you finish the regular course on time, you can continue on a smaller loop to add distance.
