But the Bulldogs couldn’t be beat in the regulation 32 minutes, when buzzer-beating 3-pointers by Bulldogs Shane Peterson and Ryan Frandsen sent the games into extra periods. San Juan needed two more periods to win. On Wednesday, Gunnison kept the game close and were only down by three at intermission. In the third period South Sevier generated a 10-point lead, which they held until the last two minutes in the fourth. That’s when Frandsen stole the ball and sank a shot for two. Frandsen was intentionally fouled on the play, and he sunk the free throws. On the ensuing in-bounds play, J. D. Pay got the ball in the paint and turned it into two. And just that fast it was a three-point game. South Sevier maintained the same three points until Gunnison’s final possession when Peterson nailed a long-range 3-pointer at the buzzer. That same three-point lead soon returned to South Sevier in the extra period, but the Bulldogs were unable to make up the deficit and lost the overtime period 4-7. Gunnison’s big man, Pay, led the Bulldogs with 17 points, followed by Wayne Young with 10 and Stewart Watson with six. Gunnison Coach Rhett Jackson said when Pay plays well the team does well. That was the case Friday as Pay produced another team-leading scoring performance with 10 against the San Juan Broncos. However, the Bulldogs got off to a rough start. Gunnison spent little time on the offensive side of the court as the Broncos forced two Gunnison turnovers and nailed three 3-pointers to start the game. The Bronco’s defense was impenetrable as San Juan cruised to an 11-0 lead. Gunnison ended the streak when Pay found Young while saving the ball from going out of bounds. Young found himself open under the basket and put it up for two. Gunnison’s defense started doing a better job in the second and forced turnovers and bad shots, which they were able to capitalize on offensively. Gunnison reduced their eightpoint first quarter deficit to three, 16-19 by halftime. Gunnison tied the game 19-19 at 5:22 in the third when Frandsen converted one of a pair of free throws. A basket by Watson gave Gunnison their first lead at 21-19, but it was short lived as San Juan nailed a 3-pointer and mid-range jumper for a 24-21 lead. Joey Crane hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a two-point Gunnison lead going into the fourth. A good move inside by Watson and a floating jump-hook from Pay illustrated an increase in Gunnison’s intensity. Crisp passes and strong moves underneath by the Bulldogs produced a five-point, 30-25 point lead early in the fourth. San Juan chipped away at the Gunnison lead until the Broncos took the lead back 33-30 with 50 seconds left in the game. With 36 seconds left in regulation, Frandsen pulled up and sunk the long ball to send the game into overtime. San Juan nailed a 3-pointer, which Bulldog Levi Christensen immediately answered with a long ball of his own. The baskets were the only ones by either team, which sent the game into a second overtime period. San Juan hit consecutive baskets to start the period for a fourpoint lead that the Bulldogs could not overcome. Along with Pay’s 10, Young scored nine and Watson contributed eight. Gunnison has earned a spot in the region tournament, but the Bulldogs will have to play an immaculate game if they hope to advance. The Bulldogs will be facing Region 13 champion Kanab, and that team’s 11-1 record, on Saturday at Snow College at 5:30 p.m. NORTH SANPETE LITTLE LEAGUE WRESTLERS ATTEND NATIONAL TOURNEY IN RICHFIELD The North Sanpete little league wrestling team attended the U.S. National Folkstyle Championship Tournament in Richfield over the weekend and placed second for the 15 and under age group. Lady Badgers pull out of four-game slump By Anne Forester Staff writer EPHRAIM—After a fourgame losing streak against Salt Lake Community College and Northern Idaho, the Snow College Lady Badgers came out on top with a 94-76 win against Air Force Prep last week. The game began with a steal by Badger Megan Hunt that set the team off in the right direction. Play was intense during the entire first half. Badger Amy Mack scored a 3-pointer with 10 minutes left in the half to tie the score 17-17. One minute later the score was tied again 21-21. Badger Andrea Durrant was the leading scorer of the game with 27 points and four rebounds. At the end of the first half a 3-pointer by Meridee Spendlove helped the Badgers gain a two-point lead at the half. Returning from the half, Air Force Prep immediately nailed a 3-pointer from Yvonne Johnston. Badger Rana McMurtrey made a field goal, tying the game 46-46. The Badgers started to pull ahead with the help of 3-pointers by Kristina Peterson and McMurtrey. Cortnee Carroll made a 3-pointer just as time ran out, but by then the game had already been decided. High scorers of the game were Corissa Kesterson with 13 points and four rebounds and Tori Lybbert with 12 points, five rebounds and one steal. McMurtrey scored 11 points. The Lady Badgers’ losses against SLCC and Idaho placed them fifth in the SWAC standings. The final scores from the games against SLCC held Jan. 28 and 29 were 45-82 and 55-67. The next week the Lady Badgers dropped another pair of games against Northern Idaho, 65-73 and 57-73. Despite their best efforts on the court the Badgers could not manage the full-court pressure applied by the Cardinals. The Badgers had a rough time not turning the ball over in their own backcourt. On the opposite side of the court the Badgers had a hard time getting the ball inside the key. Many times the Badgers would try to feed the ball to the center without success. Outside shooting wasn’t much better. The Badgers were getting out-hustled in the middle. The Cardinals came down with the majority of the rebounds. Lead scorers in Friday night’s game were Kristina Peterson with 27 points, two steals and four rebounds and point guard Rana McMurtrey with 11 points, Kesterson with nine points and Amy Mack with six points. Saturday night’s game was more of the same. Leading scorers were McMurtrey with 18 points, three steals and four rebounds and Lybbert with 13 points, seven rebounds and one steal. The Badgers will play in Price against CEU this weekend. Listen to State Basketball 2A Games!
