Born during the Great Depression on April 7, 1929, he remembers walking along the railroad tracks with cardboard in his holey shoes, picking up treasures and stopping to pull the thorns out of his feet. He and his twin brother Roy were born near Bear Lake, Idaho. The two were extremely close. “When Roy had a date and I didn’t, I drove the car.” In school he and his brother and look-alike Don Mortinson were known as the triplets. Mortinson is active in keeping their school class together. The class has met once a month since three years after their graduation. “We do things like have a marshmallow roast in my back yard,” Christensen said. Ray and Roy spent every summer with their grandparents in Bloomington, Idaho. “That is where I learned to work,” Christensen said. “It was sunup to sundown working on the farm.” Ray Christensen A favorite memory for Christensen is the halfway house. “The outhouse was halfway between my grandparent’s house and the barn,” he said. “We have fixed the outhouse with three different size holes on our property for fun.” Christensen’s father, Wendell, was a barber who loved to go camping and hunting. His mother, Viola, was his closest confidante. Her explanations of the workings of men and women led Christensen to becoming a health teacher. Christensen met his wife, Marilyn, while polishing his and his brother’s car while celebrating the victory over Japan. “She was six years younger than me,” Christensen said. “I flipped her a nickel as she walked by and said, ‘Here chicken, call me up when you are 18.’” Several years later Christensen said, “She really grew up!” The couple moved to Spring City after Christensen retired from the Air Force and from teaching in Las Vegas. Christensen has substitute taught for several local schools and is known as Mr. C at Sanpete Academy where he has worked for the last eight years. He enjoys being greeted by his former students. Christensen says his job as Spring City Senior Citizen Center director is to keep people going. “Each third Wednesday, we get together and have a good time,” Christensen said about the monthly catered meal and entrainment held for seniors at the city hall.
