Show copper mining improves says los angeles man U the following comment regarding copper la Is from the pen of 0 maurice W bacon well known los angeles Angele mining expert the first and most important in austry in the world Is that of agri culture second in importance to our civilization is the industry of mining and second in the imbor tance of the mining industry Is that of copper gold ot of course coming first the copper industry as well as most of the others has been expert encina a period of great deflation and a consequent depression brought about by the tremendous inflation during the period of the war and continued excessive production long after the discontinuance of the war it was apparent to many interested in the business that production should have ceased af air the time of the armistice but in anticipation of the tremendous tonnage that would be required in europe for its re habilitation the abnormal prodie tion was continued until the finan cial burden became so great it could not be carried on further the business however today is very rapidly assuming its normal condition the surplus copper on hand january 1 1921 was some thing like 1 pounds this surplus Is reported to have been reduced to approximately pounds and is continuing to be reduced monthly at a rate ex beeding 50 pounds the consumption at this time be ing in excess of three times the pro that for july 1921 was 70 pounds which Is only about two thirds of the world s nor mal consumption and in all ability about 50 per cent of what the demand will be as soon as the world worlds s financial situation Is again clarified A normal surplus tor for this country alone Is approximately pounds the average price of cop per since 1850 has been 19 22 cents per pound and this average ellin the period during the war Is approximately 18 conta cents per pound at these prices or several cents less with the labor and supply situation again assuming its normal positions the copper companies have and will again flourish very satisfactorily copper consumption the world s average increased cop per consumption per annum has been about 8 9 per cent which av we expect to be exceeded dur ing the next decade due to several factors the largest of which may be the tremendous demand from cen aral europe for this metal to re place the wars war s destruction or due to the abnormal electrification of industries now in contemplation throughout both the american and european continents we are informed that application has been made in washington tor for the development of IS 18 hy dro electric horsepower in this coun try and that there are in bontem applications aggregating 10 or more of this develop ment electric movement there Is also a movement on foot 4 t to electrify all of the industries of this country within a radius of miles from the atlantic ocean thereby transmitting this power electrically instead of transporting coal by rail which requirement Is stated to exceed 20 horsepower and to bring about a saving in coal transportation alone of per annum |
