I, my wife, 3 Rock Toone, Captain Station 65, Weber Fire District With the eagerly anticipated fourth of July celebrations just around the corner, it’s imperative for revelers to prioritize safety when partaking in the beloved tradition of fireworks displays. While these awe-inspiring spectacles light up the night sky with vibrant colors and mesmerizing patterns, it’s crucial to recognize the significant fire hazards they pose and the personal liability that comes with irresponsible handling of pyrotechnics. To ensure an unforgettable and incident-free celebration, Weber Fire District recommends adhering to a series of essential safety guidelines. 1. Choose the Right Location - Selecting a suitable location for fireworks is of utmost importance. Opt for open areas away from structures, dry grass, trees, or any other flammable objects. Designated firework display areas approved by local authorities or public parks are ideal choices. 2. Know Your Fireworks Take the time to familiarize yourself with the type of fireworks you are using. Read the labels attentively, follow the instructions, and ensure they are legally permitted in your area. Different fireworks have varying safety distances, so it is vital to be aware of the recommended clearances. 3. Prepare Ahead - Take necessary precautions before igniting fireworks. Have a bucket of water, a fire extinguisher, or a garden hose readily available to promptly address any accidental fires. Clear the area of debris, dry leaves, or other combustible materials. 4. Adult Supervision - Only adults should handle fireworks. Keep children at a safe distance and educate them about the potential dangers associated with fireworks. 5. Safe Ignition - Utilize a stable and flat surface to light fireworks. Refrain from holding them in your hand, and never attempt to relight a firework that failed to ignite properly. Instead, soak it in water and discard it. 6. One at a Time - Light one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance after ignition. Never attempt to combine or alter fireworks. Additionally, avoid placing fireworks in containers such as glass bottles, as they can shatter and cause injuries or fires. 7. Be Mindful of Sparklers - While sparklers may appear harmless, they can still cause burns. Always supervise children when they are using sparklers and ensure they are handled away from flammable objects or individuals. 8. Responsible Disposal - Assure that all used fireworks are soaked in water for a considerable amount of time before disposing of them in a trash can. Never place used fireworks near a structure as they can smolder and potentially cause a fire. 9. Report Emergencies - In the unfortunate event of a fire caused by fireworks, immediately contact emergency services and provide detailed information about the incident’s location. The Weber Fire District emphasizes the criticality of remaining vigilant and informed about all laws and regulations pertaining to fireworks usage, as they are subject to rapid changes and may vary across jurisdictions. By staying knowledgeable and adhering to these guidelines, we can celebrate safely, forging enduring memories for the years ahead. It’s also important to note that recent legislation has been enacted to address personal liability concerning the handling of class C explosives, including fireworks. Under this law, individuals found responsible for fires ignited by the negligent, reckless, or intentional discharge of such hazardous materials will be held accountable for the costs associated with suppressing the fire and any resulting damages. These costs can easily reach into the hundreds of thousands to even millions of dollars. Even in cases involving minors, their parent or legal guardian with custody will assume responsibility for the costs and damages incurred. The law applies irrespective of specific timeframes or locations. Negligent, reckless, or intentional conduct involving class C explosives is considered a violation, whether the discharge occurred within permitted periods or in areas not prohibited. The legislation covers fires originating from private, state-owned, federal, or tribal land. Specifically, discharging class C explosives in areas where fireworks are prohibited due to hazardous environmental conditions will be deemed as negligent, reckless, or intentional conduct. To ensure accountability and provide recourse for affected parties, the law allows those who have incurred costs associated with suppressing a fire caused by class C explosives to take legal action against the individuals responsible. Similarly, individuals who have suffered damages resulting from such fires have the right to seek compensation from the individuals responsible, in addition to exploring other available legal remedies. Through adherence to these safety precautions, everyone can enjoy the captivating beauty of fireworks without endangering lives or property. Remember, a responsible celebration ensures a memorable occasion for all, free from the devastation that fires can cause. Please note that it is essential to check local laws and regulations regarding fireworks usage, as they may vary depending on the jurisdiction. Buffalo?” A few years ago, my wife attended a women’s retreat, and the theme was “Be the Buffalo.” It’s an old story about the difference between cows and buffaloes. It has been written that there is a noticeable difference between cows and buffalo when faced with a fierce prairie storm. When cows see a storm coming, they herd together and run away from the storm; thus, getting caught in the storm longer. On the other hand, buffalo herd together and charge the storm; thus, shortening their pain and suffering from the storm. Hence, “Be the Buffalo.” After hearing this story and after going through some major setbacks of our own, we decided we wanted to build something around the symbolism of the great American buffalo. Above is Paden Anderson with his wife Karlee and daughters Kadree, Summit, and Ryder. This iconic animal has played such a key role in our country’s history and provides many great lessons we can all learn from. The Buffalo symbolizes protection, stability, prosperity, courage, strength, freedom, abundance, and gratitude. We love all aspects of what the buffalo stands for. As we dug deeper, we uncovered what it truly means to be a BUFF. A “buff” is someone who is enthusiastically interested in or very knowledgeable about a particular subject—like a movie or history buff. After learning this, we fell in love with the buffalo even more. We could be real estate buffs! As we brainstormed, we found that the buffalo/buff space is fairly saturated and so we needed something to make it more unique and focused. After much thought, we landed with MTN BUFF.
