Mountain Arts and Music is gearing up for a great summer of creativity! We are a nonprofit organization with the mission of “Supporting the Creative Arts in Ogden Valley.” We are all about people doing art or music, so we offer opportunities through workshops, events, and other activities. Here are some of the events we have planned this summer. Fiber Dying with Dyer’s Woad - Yes, that nasty invasive plant with the beautiful flower was brought here by pioneers for a reason—to use for dying fabric. There are precursor chemicals to indigo in the leaves of the dyer’s woad plant. This workshop takes participants through the 3-step process to extract the dye and make it useable for dyeing fabric. It is about a 3-hour magical process. We’ll serve a light lunch, and you will go away with beautifully dyed pieces of fiber, fabric, or whatever. It is planned for Saturday, June 3, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Eden Community Center/bowery at Eden Park. The cost is $25/ person, which includes all supplies. Register and pay online at mountainartsandmusic.org. Kids Art Classes - We have completed two sessions of Kids Art on Tuesday mornings for the home schoolers and will do another session in June. For more information and to register, please go to mountainartsandmusic.org/kidsart-classes. We just successfully completed six sessions of art classes at Valley Elementary and are working on plans to offer more during the 2023-2024 school year. KIDS NEED ART! Open Arts & Music - This free event will be held every Thursday evening from 6:00 to dusk in beautiful Huntsville Square starting Thursday, June 29. We offer watercolor supplies and instruction by two awesome art teachers, a kids’ art station, and an open mic for music or the spoken word. All levels are welcome. Eilen Jewell to Perform Outdoor Summer Concert August 3 at Ogden Nature Center Outdoors and at the Ogden Nature Center, this event combines an unrivaled outdoor setting with talented Americana/ folk musicians! Held in the glen behind the Visitor Center, this summer evening will find you lounging on a picnic blanket with toes in the grass, sunset in the distance, and live music filling your senses. Eilen Jewell - Over the course of nine albums, she’s crisscrossed the globe countless times and shared bills with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn, Mavis Staples, Wanda Jackson, George Jones, and Emmylou Harris. Rolling Stone lauded Jewell’s “clever writing,” while NPR declared that she has a “sweet and clear voice with a killer instinct lurking beneath the shiny surface,” and The Washington Post mused that “if Neko Case, Madeleine Peyroux and Billie Holiday had a baby girl who grew up to front a rockabilly band, she’d probably sound a lot like Eilen Jewell. Hailed by American Songwriter as “one of America’s most intriguing, creative, and idiosyncratic voices,” Eilen Jewell rises from the ashes on her captivating new album, Get Behind the Wheel, picking up the pieces of her shattered world and finding new purpose and meaning after watching her marriage, her band, and what felt like her entire career fall apart in a series of spectacular, heartbreaking implosions. Co-produced by multi-instrumental wizard Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider, Hayes Carll), the collection pushes the acclaimed singer and songwriter’s trademark blend of vintage rootsnoir into more psychedelic territory, with spacious, cinematic arrangements complementing her revelatory explorations of grief, loss, resilience, and redemption. An Idaho native, Jewell built her career the old-fashioned way, touring relentlessly with the kind of undeniable live show that converts the uninitiated into instant acolytes.
