Show C5 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Among Friends Annual gathering of ‘unique’ bunch gives women a chance to learn and experience the great outdoors A hip hop dancing class was one of the events scheduled for this year. Josie Luke T he women who attend the annual meeting of the “Flockers” are a unique bunch. As Wynneann Cowley quipped, “There’s some goofy broads up here.” But either in spite of, or because of, those goofy broads, the event continues to grow, drawing nearly 70 people to their third annual gathering at Bear Creek Campground in Huntington Canyon. From July 11-13, locals gathered with women from Santequin, Brighton, Richfield, Orem, Cedar City, Glenwood and even parts of Colorado and Nevada to enjoy themselves for the third annual event. As part of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Women in the Outdoors program, the women gather to “learn new skills, meet people with similar interests, and obtain a greater appreciation of the outdoor world.” They also tout the weekend as an opportunity to be in an “uncompetitive environment,” away from husbands, boyfriends, sons, pets, and young children.” The women who attended were treated to a number of classes, including Dutch oven cooking, crafts, kayaking and canoeing, archery, skeet shooting, wilderness survival, auto care and maintenance, game calling and scoring, photography, hip hop dancing, gardening and many others. For Donna, the weekend is “worth the mileage” from West Jordan to Huntington Canyon. “If even the young women come here and have fun every year, you know it’s fun,” she remarked. For sisters Laura Sue Smith, from Glenwood, and Kath Hurd, from Orem, the event gives them a chance to be together, and also to meet many new friends. “This is our vacation every year, “said Laura. When Kath arrived at the event, she was pleased to meet a friend, Andrea Warner, who drove from Lindon. The two met three days before the event began. “We go way back,” joked Kath, “to Tuesday.” Kath, who works at COSCO, met Andrea while she was toting a kayak around the store, which she had plans to use for an open water swim in August, when she saw Kath and began chatting with her. When Kath realized what an outdoor person Andrea was, she invited her to come to the Flockers’ gathering. Andrea, who just dropped her son off at the missionary training center on Wednesday, viewed the event as a great opportunity to get her mind off of him being gone, and so though they didn’t know each other well, the two new friends enjoyed the weekend together. Such friendships are to be found among many of the women who attend the gathering. Even for Wynneann, who joked about the “goofy broads” who attend, she has Photos by Josie Luke Tiffany Hansen tries to light a fire as part of the wilderness survival class.
