Show A6 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Nielson crews continue work on Moab tailings project Continued from Page A1. 2 million cubic yards of earth as it completes phase one of the holding cell for the uranium tailings. According to Mark Greenhalgh, Nielson Construction project superintendant, the construction company expects to complete phase one of the project by November using a fleet of up to nine scrapers, as well as bulldozers and graders. The cell will be dug to a depth of 25 feet, and after the tailings have been moved from Moab, it will be capped with eight feet of dirt and one foot of rock. Some of the earth removed in creation of the cell will be used to create a wedge on the north side of the site to protect it from flash floods, according the Metzler. The area around Crescent Junction was chosen for the holding cell because of the Mancos shale in the area, which makes an excellent natural liner, eliminating the need for expensive manmade liners. According to Metzler, the water table at the site is 4,000 feet below the surface, and the cell is designed to last 1,000 years. The project has proven to be a boon for the economy of Green River. Nielson Construction employees have been staying in motels in the city, shopping at local stores and eating at local eateries throughout the week. The company has also hired new employees from both the Green River and Moab areas for the project. While the company has hired a number of employees from the area, the need for additional employees in the coming weeks should level out as the last few pieces of heavy equipment A Nielson Construction water wagon provides dust control while crews construct the pond at Crescent Junction. are brought into the area for the cell construction portion of the project, according to Nielson Construction human resource representatives. Zions Bank invites public to help celebrate its 135th anniversary The public is invited to join in celebrating Zions Bank’s 135 year anniversary by enjoying complimentary birthday cake at the bank’s branch locations in Castle Dale and Huntington on July 18. As part of its 135 year birthday celebration, Zions Bank is also granting more than 135 service-oriented “wishes” in their communities. Community members are invited to nominate a local service project that employees at each branch loca- tion can perform to benefit a worthy cause. Project possibilities range from donation drives to car washes, from playground cleanup to tree planting, or volunteering for children’s programs, offering activities for the elderly, or sharing financial literacy. Through Aug. 8, service wish nomination forms will be available at all Zions Bank branch locations. Priority consideration will be given to wish requests that support endeavors that immediately benefit communities in which Zions Bank has a presence, benefit low-income and underserved populations, support individuals or groups that have demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles, and that emphasize collaboration between organizations, groups and businesses in communities. Zions Bank’s regional review panels will evaluate wish requests. Community service projects will be provided by branch employees Aug. 29 through Oct. 1.
