Show C1 Life Is The Emery County Review, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Swell Emery and Carbon Counties, Utah u Living in the San Rafael Swell Area u T h e Camping C Life James L. Davis The adventure, the sights, the sounds and the joy of getting away from it all amping has come a long way from the ‘good ol’ days’ when roughing it meant, well, roughing it. Today’s campers and trailers are more lavish than many first apartments of a decade or more ago and the camp sites to park your campers and trailers at have become a bit lavish in their own right. Even many of the camping sites in the outback of Emery and Carbon counties prove to be a bit more civilized then days of old, with portable toilets that don’t smell like portable toilets and fire pits that can actually contain a fire. Of course, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with a little civilization in your camping. Amenities such as a shower are more of a necessity today than they were in the old days. Whether that is because we stink more today or simply because we have in some way become more “civilized” is a matter of opinion. With gasoline strangling the vacation plans of a great many motorists, the great outdoors right outside your backdoor is beginning to look more and more desirable. And for those who haven’t taken the time to vacation a little closer to home, there are plenty of camping sites available to entice you out of your living room, and entice the traveler to try a vacation off the beaten path in Emery County. From the A-OK RV Park and Shady Acres RV Camp in Green River, to the Joe’s Valley Resort and Marina, or Millsite and Huntington State Park, there is a little bit of civilization you can keep with you as you get away from it all. For those who like their camping a little more uncivilized, the forests of the Manti-La Sal offer some of the greatest camping opportunities available, and locals always have their favorites. Many of the camping opportunities available in the MantiLa Sal are unlike any other and although many might lament the loss of some camping spots, there are still a multitude of camping areas available for those who call the Emery and Carbon area home, as well as those who are visiting. The Manti La Sal the Forest Service offers 15 campgrounds that might be considered a little more “civilized” than others. The Forest Service also allows responsible camping with a policy it calls “dispersed” camping. Dispersed camping allows for utilizing undeveloped camp or picnic areas within 150 feet of a road or trail, unless the area is signed or closed. In selecting a dispersed camping site, Ferron District Continued on Page C3.
