It Millard. It was a tale of two halves on Thursday for the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles boys basketball team, as they took on Kyle Collinsworth and the Provo Bulldogs on Thursday, Dec. 17. The Golden Eagles lost 56-39, but outscored the Bulldogs in an impressive second half after trailing 32-7 at halftime, Coach Johnny Averett admitted that second half was something of a moral victory for Maple Mountain. "We've struggled putting the ball in the basket," said Averett. "I hope fthat after] that second half, with the shots we were making, the jinx is off." Averett continued to say, "We are good shootefs. We do have a lot of good shooters on this team, and I know they can put 'em in, it's just a matter of gaining confidence. And I think they started to do that tonight." Highly touted BYU recruit Kyle Collinsworth put up 22 points against Maple Mountain, while the Golden Eagles' Kelby Crandall added 11 points on the other end to lead the team. Maple Mountain went scoreless in the first quarter and allowed 23 points in the second on the way to a 32-7 deficit at the half. Then the Golden Eagles came out firing in the second half, matching Provo's starters nearly point-forpoint in the third quarter, and outscoring the Bulldogs 21-10 in the fourth to narrow the gap on what in the first half had looked to be a dismal game. Coach Averett said that at halftime, "I told 'em they needed to try harder on defense, they needed to get after loose balls and rebounds, and we needed to go inside more. We were getting good looks in the first half, but we needed to go inside, and draw some fouls, and get some layups, and when we do things like that, the outside shot, for us, seems to come easier. So, I thought we did that for the most part... they did what I asked them to do." The day after the Provo game. Maple Mountain got its second win, a 76-70 victory over Parowan in the Hurricane Tournament. The team is now 2-6 after losing 67-41 to Hurricane on Saturday. rtf-.;&''"'' ''""' • * * * • * Mike Olsen / The Sentinel COME HIGH WATER: Holly Christensen took first place for Spanish Fork in the 200m freestyle. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK Travis Still Junior Basketball Forward Travis Still is the son of Brian and Shelly Still of Spanish Fork. Although the Dons suffered tough losses against Murray and Provo last week, Still led the team in scoring. He had a game-high 21 points against the Spartans. The 6'2" junior is emerging as a team leader and should be an exciting player to watch when Region 8 action opens in January. 552 N. Main |
