They learned about heroes, communication, service and many other helpful topics. They even had the opportunity to hear from Miss Utah. "It was a great experience and I'm glad I went," said Kambri Shenk. "I broke a board!" said SBO Garret Stirland. The student council was grateful for this experience to learn how to better serve the school. By Christina Heywood. SF Drill Team Alan Ashton is the new vice-principal at Maple Mountain High School. He became interested in education because of the excellent teachers he had in his youth. During his senior year, he had the opportunity to help his instructor by teaching a unit on electronics. Ashton began his teaching career at Provo High and taught there for nine years. Later he became the vice-principal at Timpview High. After being at Timpview for five years, Ashton accepted the position of vice-principal here at our new Maple Mountain High School. Opening up a new high requires a lot of hard work and attention to detail. Ashton admits that it has been demanding, from ordering the furniture to making sure that all equipment arrives into the right rooms. He said, "It's been fun, but challenging at the same time." In his spare time, he enjoys riding motorcycles, snowmobiling, vacationing at the beach, and spending time with his Alan Ashton wife and three children. Before he started teaching, he had an interesting job. He worked at a place called Kuhni's, which is an animal rendering plant; and, his duties included processing the animal from the time it came into the plant until the final packaging. Ashton is excited for this year of firsts; his vision for our school includes, "A school in which anyone can accomplish anything they dream; a great school, where we work together." He also said, "We have great teachers to match great students. We have the best teachers in the valley all under one roof." He works as a CNA and helps out by changing beds, giving people food, washing old people, testing blood sugar and checking vitals of the patients. Heward likes his jobs there, although he doesn't enjoy washing old people. "That part isn't my favorite," he said. "Except for that, I like helping people." This internship gives him insight on what he would like to do in his future. "It will give me experience in the hospital so I can see how everything Hyrum Heward works. It's made me realize that I don't want to be a nurse," he said. Heward would rather do the doctor's job. Someday he wants to run his own practice as a general practitioner, rather than work in a hospital. |
