Friday, Oct. 9 was homecoming for the Salem Hills Skyhawks and the football team didn't disappoint, downing Payson 29-22. While playing what will probably be their biggest rival in the coming years, Salem was able to give their fans exactly what they wanted — a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback victory. The offense was once again led by senior quarterback Josh Adams, who threw and ran the ball for 130 yards a piece, while completing 54 percent of his passes. Kolapa Wolfgramm led the running backs with a six-yard average on eight carries, and Cody Bullard led the receivers with 54 yards. Despite the impressive output by the offense, it would ultimately be the defense that would end up winning the game with a stop late in the fourth quarter. Payson started the game off by receiving the ball and driving down to the 12 yard-line, where they were stopped short on third down, and attempted a field goal. Payson missed the field goal, which gave the ball to Salem on the 12 yard-line, only to have Salem fumble the snap, which Payson returned for a TD. Despite their poor start, the Salem offense took their ensuing possession the length of the field and scored on a one-yard run by Phillip Sorensen. Salem was given the ball back after a quick three-and-out by Payson, and wasted no time in scoring again, with a 55-yard TD run by Adams. To open up the second half, Salem received the ball and Jason Anderson returned the kickoff all the way to the Salem 40 yard-line, giving the offense a short field to work with. The Skyhawks scored two plays later on a 23yard TD pass to Josh Fafita. Payson finally got back on the board early in the fourth quarter, with a short TD run from the two yardline; however, the ensuing PAT was blocked by Salem. The Lion's defense then forced a Salem three-and-out, giving the ball back to the Lions in good field position. Payson's offense then drove down to the 11 yard-line svhere the Skyhawk defense was able to force a field goal. O 2009 American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning AH rights reserved Friday night's much-anticipated meeting between Region 8's top two football teams, Spanish Fork and Springville, lived up to all the hype. Going into the game, the Dons' only loss was to top-ranked Bountiful, and Spanish Fork was looking to prove something against the Devils, ranked fourth in the state in 4A. Balanced play on both sides of the ball led to a dramatic 27-27 tie game late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Dons, Springville came up with a timely interception followed by a touchdown to go up 33-27, giving the Devils the unofficial region championship. The Dons came out hungry in the first quarter. On the opening drive of the game, PJ Inoke carried the ball into the end zone untouched on third and goal to put SF on the board first, 7-0. Everyone knew the Dons could score, but could their defense hold the explosive Red Devil offense? The answer was a resounding yes, as Travis Still sacked Springville QB Steve Bate on third-and-seven to force a punt on their first possession. The Dons looked to have Bate running scared on Springville's next drive, but the resourceful quarterback found Taylor Baker See SF • A12 I Shane Marshall / The Sentinel AIR TIME: Spanish Fork's Chase Loftin demonstrates his vertical leap as he pulls in a reception. |
