Show Guardian of Your Community News Sentinel Larsen turns 30 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2009 • B3 Directing the band at MMH Jessika Hilton MMHS Namon Bills / The Sentinel HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Larsen Elementary turned 30 last week, and to celebrate teachers, students and parents came together for an assembly on Friday, Oct. 2. They held a Larsen Idol competition with Mr. Lawrence, Mrs. Knowles and Mr. Mecham as judges and Larsen's own Mr. Bingham as Ryan Seacrest. Performing groups represented the various decades of Larsen's history and include Dancing Queen Divas from the 70s (teachers), Hot Mamas from the 80s (members of the PTA) and the student council doing the Macarena from the 90s. The final act came from the Jonas Brothers, who resembled Principal Mike Johnson and teachers Lynn Teuscher and Keir Scoubes. The student council won the competition, with perfect 10s from the judges. The assembly wasn't just about fun and games, however. As they did throughout the week, students committed themselves to being healthy and living drug-free. . If Maple Mountain's new band instructor, Mr. Christopher Wilson, had any choice of car to drive, it would be a vintage Chevy Bel-air; instead, you'll often see him in his beloved '94 Toyota Corolla. A talented musician, Mr. Wilson can virtually. play any type of music on any instrument. From jazz to ska, R&B to ethnic, all he needs is an instrument. While his preferred instrument is the saxophone, he is skilled in electric bass, trumpet, harmonica and nearly everything in between. His education started at Timpview High School where he would later return as a teacher. From high school, he attended BYU where he earned his bachelors of music (BM) in Instrumental Music Education. He was a member of the marching band while attending BYU. While at Timpview, Mr. Wilson directed the marching band. He is now the marching band instructor at Maple Mountain. Recently, the MMHS marching band took fifth place overall, second place in guard and an award for outstanding percussion. Chris Wilson Which is an exceptional accomplishment for the school's first marching band competition. Outside of all activities school-related, Chris Wilson enjoys improvisation a I comedy, dance, and Star Wars. Italian and Mexican food are at the top of his list, followed by a good run of some Final Fantasy. Still a fan of the classics, he enjoys Disney and Pixar movies. Basketball, football, volleyball and ultimate frisbee are a few of his favorite sports. Regardless of the opponent, Mr. Wilson can be found cheering for the BYU Cougars wholeheartedly. Maple Mountain feels fortunate to have such a talented and motivational music educator. Counseling secretary Raine Cameron Spilker and Keaton Atkinson MMHS New at Maple Mountain High is the counseling secretary, Margaret Raine. Raine has been a secretary for two years, last year she worked at Springville High School. Raine has worked in Nebo School District for eight years. She graduated from high school in California. Then she attended Sierra College and American River College. Before moving to Utah, Raine lived in California, where she would ride horses on the beach. She loves the ocean and spending time on the beach. Raine is also passionate about watching her daughter play soccer. She loves to sew, watch movies and spend time with her children. Her mosi uncanny job was working at a cherry farm and sorting the cherries with her hands. Raine loves her job and loves being here at Maple Mountain High School. She adores students and wants to help them succeed. Students are encouraged to visit her in the counseling office. Volleyball coach comes to MM Shalice Henrie and Crystal Murray MMHS Amber Hall is Maple Mountain's new volleyball coach. Serving a ball and a team for 13 years, she played in the Junior Olympics when she was a senior in high school. While she was a player she was injured and had two wrist surgeries. After her surgeries, she coached in Idaho, then at Timpview High while she attended Brigham Young University. Hall also coached at Payson High school before coming to Maple Mountain to start new traditions Amber Hall in volleyball. Hall said, '"We're a bunch of young girls, but we are doing well and we are all learning what a team is all about." THE SENTINEL Covering what matters most |
