Show SPANISH FORK 11th annual Flag Retirement Jen Allen STAFF WRITER Celebrating its 1 lth year, the annual Flag Retirement Ceremony will take place at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds open arena. The event will be supported by the National Guard. Apache helicopters arc scheduled to fly over the area, from north to south at exactly 7 p.m. to kick off the ceremony. The speaker will be Captain Keir Scoubcs from ihe Ulah Army National Guard, and will showcase a 21-gun salute. Scoubes moved lo Spanish Fork in 2002 and has an extensive background that includes attending basic training during 1998. Raised in Cotlonwood, Calif.. Scoubes is the son of Alan and Colleen Scoubes. He is married to Robyn Felsted of Great Falls, Va. Scoubes' civilian career includes leaching fifth grade at Larsen Elementary. He has been working for the National Guard for a total of 12 years, and has been a part of both Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Persian Gulf and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In addition to the help and support of the National Guard, children who are Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts are encouraged to come and help retire flags. They should be in full uniform to participate and can even start collecting old flags for the evenl. Citizens or local Boy Scouts and their troops are encouraged lo bring their flags to the City Office building, ihe National Guard building, or to the event half an hour early so they may be properly prepared. The Flag Retirement Ceremony will take place at the open arena at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 20. Admission is free. Citizens may want to come early so that they will be able to see the Apache helicopters fly overhead. This ceremony has become one of Spanish Fork's most revered forms of celebrating the festivities.
