Show SPANISH FORK WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 2009 • A5 Covering what matters most Youth Arts Festival brings in professional instructors An award-winning singer/songwriter, a professional dancer from New York City, a published author and illustrator, an expert in early childhood music and a nationally-recognized performing arts instructor. What do these people have in common? They will all be teaching children ages 3-18 at the Spanish Fork Youth Arts Festival this summer, June 15-26,2009. "We are so lucky to have such extremely qualified teachers/' said Melanie Fillmore, Director of the Youth Arts Festival. "These are classes worth driving across Utah Valley for. They are the equivalent to the types of intensive workshops that parents often send their children to and pay far more money for. If people were to take these exact same classes from these exact same teachers in the private sector, they would pay between five to 10 times as much." Many of the instructors are professional performers or artists, including singer/songwriter Cherie Call, who has recorded six albums and won multiple Pearl Awards for her songs. Cherie's original songs have also been featured on movie soundtracks. She will be teaching a songwriting class for teens ages 13-17. "By the time I turned 13, I was writing and performing many of my own songs," said Call. "I'm excited to help other young people develop their talents through this workshop." A wide variety of classes will be offered during the two-week festival, including: • Instrumental music: Folk and bluegrass ensemble for fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo and bass; beginning guitar • Music: songwriting; show choir; Kindermusik; find your voice; shakers and movers for special needs children • Art: Lego art; hands on arts and crafts; painting; sculpture; young artists; kinder arts and crafts; the art connection. • Dance: creative dance; dancing superheroes for boys ages 4-7; beginning ballet; rock and ballet for advanced dancers; break dancing and hip hop • Theater: youth theater workshop — students will receive instruction in acting, singing and dance; costume design. • Literature: Creative writing and young writers' workshop, including poetry, mystery, fantasy and personal memoirs •Photography: portrait, photojournalism, outdoor and action "We truly have something to offer every child this year," said Melanie Fillmore, "especially because these classes are your most affordable way to have this level of quality instruction:' Registration for the Youth Arts Festival begins May 18, and classes are filled on ,a first-come, first-serve basis.
