Nebo district is known throughout the state for its cutting edge technology and professional development for their teachers. Over 950 teachers took advantage of over 50 courses ranging from technology, literacy, math, first aid and fine arts. For a fee, teachers from other districts were also welcomed in the classes that had unfilled openings. I*fe#a* Call, curriculum "director, said, "In order to give our teachers new and fresh ideas as well as the latest research information and teaching strategies, we offer professional development taught by high quality professionals throughout the year with concentration in the summer." Some of the more popular classes, filled to capacity within just a week or two of registration, were iPods in Elementary Classrooms and iPods in Secondary Classrooms, taught by Nebo District technology experts Cory Little, Pam Turley, and Jared Orton. Another favorite course is a literacy class called Make and Take for the Early Grades, taught by Darlynn Menlove and Phyllis Peterson. One participant. Miss Mcllroy, second-grade teacher at Spring Lake Elementary said, "Nebo District offers the best classes, and I truly look forward to taking advantage of the professional offerings each summer. I have learned so much!" Summer is the perfect time for teachers to update their teaching strategies and learn the latest techniques available to help students succeed. Research has proven , for example, how important music is in the success of remembering and learning. Dr. Mike Christiansen, a professor at Utah State University, led the Teaching Beginning Guitar class to a group of enthusiastic teachers (or students in this case) who took the class so that they could teach guitar lessons in their own classrooms or simply enhance their personal teaching methods through music. The Mentor Academy, a course offered for new teachers, begins in the summer and will continue throughout the school year. Through the academy, over 100 new teachers learn the best teaching practices. Seth Sorensen, district testing coordinator, teaches how to interpret testing data. The teachers will use this knowledge to meet each students' learning needs. Annette Evans, mentor coordinator and recipient of the Benjamin Cluff Jr. Award for Excellence in Education, said, "I am amazed at the offerings at Nebo. This district really strives to provide for their teachers. Our Curriculum Director, Nedra Call, brings in professors that teach all over the United States with a variety of perspectives and resources. We have better teachers because of this ongoing training. These courses create passion, energy, and excitement about teaching. I am proud to be associated with Nebo because of their dedication to teachers and training." Although Nebo District's many classes benefit the teachers, this training ultimately equates to higher success for student learning.
