Michael Phelps did win his record-breaking eighth gold medal in a single Olympics — but history was also made on a slightly smaller stage at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, with the inauguration of the Utah County Fair Demolition Derby. Over 30 drivers competed in the first annual event, which included four heats, a qualification grudge round, a powder puff round for the women, a final round — and last but not least, a wipeout round. When the dust had settled, Spanish Fork's own Kurt Zabriskie was crowned derby king, winning $3,000. Second place went to Johnny Gullo with $1,500, and third went to Bill Bowman with $800. The most aggressive driver award went to Brad Bowman. In the powder puff round, Joy Zabriskie ended up flipping and landing on top of Amber Bowman's vehicle. EMTs and firefighters responded quickly, and Bowman was removed from the car without injury. Zabriskie came finished the round in second, with Amy Durrows winning and Deven Small taking third. The only injury of the evening came in the wipeout round. EMTs removed Brian Proctor from his car with what was reported to be a shoulder injury. Throughout the evening, announcer Jim Louder kept the sell-out crowd entertained between rounds. A fireworks show followed the demolition derby as a celebratory finale to this year's Utah County Fair. ROAD RAGE: There was plenty of action for everyone at the Demolition Derby.
