Something interesting and new to take notice of will be the performance and competition of the Oak Hills Vaulters. Vaulting is defined as dance and gymnastics on the back of a moving horse. Many people in the beehive state scratch their head when they hear of such a sport only because there has only been one vaulting club in Utah for 39 years until last October. The Oak Hills Vaulters are a club that was started 40 years ago by a woman named Mary Ann Ford. She owns Oak Hills Stables which are located just below Woodland Hills in Salem. Inside the stables, she began teaching vaulting, all equestrian discipline (Western and English riding), the breaking and training of horses and more. The graceful, acrobatic sport of vaulting was first introduced to her by a trainer and friend from England. This sport has been popular with the English for many years. Ford fell in love with it immediately and one day decided to teach vaulting and train horses. Today the only other club in the state is based in Provo and recently sprung forward to enter the sport. Ford's granddaughter, KyLynn Warren, is the team's head coach. Warren began vaulting when she was only four years old. Since then, she has competed for 15 years and coached for 16 years, beginning at the age of 15. She has a background in ballroom dancing, jazz, lyrical, tumbling, hip hop and ballet training. Although these extra-curricular activities will help with balance and coordination, none of them are required to become a vaulter. However, any such activity will certainly help. "We do take kids from dance backgrounds," said Warren. "But we have kids come to us that aren't coordinated at all. We also take handicapped students We'll take anybody who just wants to get on a horse." She has a deep love for the sport which See VAULTERS • BIO Salem Days Golf Tournament Salem Days 2008 kicked off with the annual Salem Days Golf Tournament at Spanish Oaks, Friday, Aug. 1.
