Show -If -NEWS- B6 • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2008 Spanish Fork Creative writers distribute work Salem Elementaries Courtesy photos READING CHALLENGE: Students in all three elementary schools in Salem, including Salem, Foothills and Mt. Loafer, took the Salem reading challenge given to them by their principals. Ken VanAusdal, Ed Schollenberger and Jeanne Baadsgaard all challenged the students at their schools to read and meet grade level reading goals! The reward for reading was fun activities, rotations and lunch at the Salem Pond. Most of the students met the weekly reading challenge and exceeded the given goal! Each grade level from each school met at the pond and had a great time celebrating their accomplishments. Pictured here are students enjoying story telling, music, volley ball, dancing and skits. Thanks to Salem students for being such great readers! Covering what matters most The English students at Spanish Fork Junior High have been busy sharing their writing skills around the community. Student writing selections have been compiled into two anthologies that include all forms of writing from prose to poetry. The seventh/eighth grade book is entitled "A Creative Documentation of Our Torture". The ninth grade book is entitled "A File of Random Writings'*. These booklets have been distributed around the community to doctors' and dentists' offices as well as other establishments that might have a waiting office. Look for them as you find yourself settled in for a long wait. Mrs. Belts' eighth grade Honors English class finished their 50 hour projects. This is a substantial project that took students all year to complete. They chose what they wanted to do, but it had to be creative and include writing. The projects include autobiographies, scrapbooks, genealogy stories with pictures, novels, short story collections, poetry collections, children's stories and music composition and performance. The projects were impressive and the Honors English students are to be commended for their work. Here are some samples of student writing: A Heart to Heart Poem By Kerri Liston I wish my mind would just relax And let my heart do the talking If only you could understand What my eyes are seeing My heart plays tricks On my eyes leading me To see your eyes gazing upon me I wish I could just tell you The way I feel But my mind won't take a break... And neither will my nerves. If I Were In Charge of the World By Hannah Carson If I were in charge of the world, I'd cancel R rated movies, Boring Biology classes, All tests, And the Go My Access Program. If I were in charge of the world, There'd be fantasy Thursday, Cheesecake February, * And do nothing but read Tuesday. If I were in charge of the world, . •" ;.. * You wouldn't have creepy crawling creatures, ; - ? r - ^ You wouldn't have tbo high of expectations, ^ f ^ V ^ K " You wouldn't have drugs and alcohol, Or "Do the dishes", You wouldn't even have to do the dishes. If I were in charge of the world, A hippopotamus would be able to do your homework, All annoying younger siblings would be obedient to you, And a person who sometimes forgot where the walls are, And sometimes forgot how to walk, Would still be allowed to be : In charge of the world. Don't Let the Door Hit Ya* Well, my dear, the time is here, The time most parents dread and fear. When you go off on your own, Please keep in touch by using your phone. When you are poor and eating cheap noodles, Remember that I love you oodles and oodles. Have fun, but remember to study, Try to be nice and make a new buddy. Hopefully you will get a job; Don't sit on the couch and become a slob. Try not to give up if times get hard; Stick with your dreams, buy a nice house with a yard. While you are young, take time to travel, Before you are old and start to unravel. I hope some day you meet a nice guy, Who is super cute and does not lie. No matter how far your dreams make you roam, We will always be happy to have you back home. Every year and every day, I'll miss you while you are away.
