Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork B8 • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2007 Dons vs. PG: From FOOTBALL • B l Dons well into field goal range, and with one second left Alan Measom attempted a 41-yard try. He booted the ball with authority but his kick was partially blocked. The Dons came away short again as they suffered another close loss in region four by the score of 23-20. Spanish Fork's defense shut down the PG option attack early and forced the Vikings to punt. However, a botched snap benefited the Dons and they took over at the PG 33 yard line. On the very next play, Lewis found his burly tight end for a big first down. Wilson broke two tackles on his way to a 16-yard gain, which set up the Dons' first score. Lewis hooked up with Dallin Naulu for a ten-yard strike but the PAT hooked wide left. Spanish had captured the momentum midway through the first and their defense began to take charge. Defensive end Chris Olson broke loose and sacked the Viking QB for a five-yard loss to force another punt. Trevor Randolph ripped off a 25-yard return and it looked like the Dons were in business. But, unfortunately, Lewis threw an interception which was returned 50 yards to the SF seven yard line. Two plays later and the Vikings were in business as they capitalized on a three-yard TD run. Pleasant Grove took a 7-6 lead after a successful PAT early in the second quarter of play. Both offenses resolved to throw the ball more in the first half, due to great pursuit from each run defense. Less than three minutes remained until the half when Spanish Fork re-captured the lead. Lewis found Wilson on a 14-yard fade route where the TE outleaped his defender for the ball. But the Vikings had enough time left to get within striking distance. They relied on the leg of their kicker and he nailed a 40-yard field goal to grab the momentum and pull within three at the break. After the half, Pleasant Grove came out to establish the run. They converted on a crucial fourth down, followed by a TD that put the Vikings up 17-13 after chewing a lot of time off the clock. Spanish was facing a strong north wind to begin the second half, and consequently Gardner's punts struggled to travel any great distance, thus leaving good field position for Pleasant Grove. The Vikings capped off another drive as their clutch kicker split the uprights with a 30-yard field goal. Trailing 20-13 at the start of the fourth, Lewis and company went to work. They capped off an eleven-play, 61-yard drive with a one-yard QB sneak by Lewis. The touchdown signal was only given after a 15-second delay as referees searched for the signal caller at the bottom of the pile. With only three minutes to play, the Don defense made another huge stand which gave the offense a chance to regain the lead. But turnovers and missed opportunities played a huge part in this one and the Dons came away empty handed. SF must win at Lehi next Friday for a shot at a play-in game.
