E-XPLOREI ESCACANTEI BIRMIDAY4 jana@exploreescalante.com Spring : The official beginning isn't until March 21st. Close, but as of this writing we had just gotten two additional inches of snow. Snow, snow, snow — we've certainly gotten our share this year. It's been good from the standpoint of the melt-off is a slow sink into the ground. But it's been cold here at night still and it's going to take a little more time to melt off the rest. The geese are back, the deer are up from the desert and after the fruit trees, and the goldfinches have been at the feeders this past week. Getting closer. Night Out: The Relief Society Birthday Party is Saturday night the 19th. Dinner and a movie and visiting with friends and neighbors — it should be fun. Utah Legislature: Several of the bills I've been watching have passed the Utah House and Senate and await the Governor's signature. I'll tell you more about them after the governor takes some action on them. I expect to see he signs them, but we'll wait for the ink to dry first. Garfield County: Caucus this week for county wide offices. Don't forget to file if you're interested in running for office. In the meantime, the Salt Lake Tribune reported on the healthiest counties in Utah. The report from the Utah Department of Health reviewed each county and their residents interested in taking responsibility for their health — they smoke less and exercise more. They are also where more people are employed, insured and educated. The healthiest county was Morgan, with Cache, Summit and Utah right behind. The worst was Carbon in 25th place out of 29 counties - Garfield was 17th. Daggett, Piute, Rich and Wayne were not ranked. Also included in the ranking factors were rates of smoking, obesity, binge drinking, teenage pregnancy, insurance and high school graduation along with access to healthful foods and air pollution levels. I'm working with a group of moms here in Escalante on a healthy food grant. Stay tuned. I wasn't out and about much this week as I finished up our taxes for the accountant — hooray!!! Utah cities have been ranked as some of the top four worst polluted cities in the United States. We also have numerous lakes, rivers and streams that are contaminated with methyl mercury, a byproduct of coal burning power plants and mining activities. Atmospheric transport is likely the primary mechanism by which mercury is distributed throughout the environment from coal burning power plants. Atmospheric mercury comes not only from Utah, but from as far away as China. Governor Herbert and State Representative Mike Noel endorse coal burning power plants, coal mines and our first coal strip mine. We presently have 16 coal burning power plants which produce 95% of the power for Utah. A large portion of power produced in Utah is sold to California and Nevada, states that can care less that the power they receive is polluting Utah. Governor Herbert has received $10,000.00 from Alton Coal Development LLC, although legal according to his first amendment rights, he must realize this is a moral and ethical issue. We must stop catering to lobbyist and special interest groups who are only out for their own personal gains. Alton Coal Development is largely backed by wealthy owners from Florida and Colorado. I doubt these owners will be spending their profits in Utah. Its not always about the money. Our children and Utah will be inheriting the consequences of Governor Herbert and Representative Mike Noels decisions. One of the consequences we have inherited is elevated mercury levels in seven rivers and nine lakes. The Division of Wildlife Resources has released fish consumption advisories due to elevated mercury levels in different species of fish. For example: The East fork of the Sevier River, between Otter Creek Reservior and Piute Reservior, (Piute County) . The advisory says pregnant women and children should not eat any brown trout from this area due to excessive levels of methyl mercury, which can cause neurological effects in the developing fetus and children. The Sevier River is the most widely used river in the state of Utah for irrigation. The Sevier River aquifer also supplies well water to our homes, and our livestock and wildlife drink from this river. This river irrigates our crops, which are consumed by humans and livestock. Agriculture production generates 2.3 billion dollars, and accounts for 19,500 jobs. Agriculture must be protected, we must not be short sighted looking for the quick buck in the coal industry. For an example, in the town of Colstrip, Montana the residents and nearby ranches have their well water and stock ponds contaminated by pollutants from nearby mines. Representative Mike Noel who claims to be a rancher, says he is taking care of Gods creation. I think Mike Noel needs to look up the definition of what Gods creation really is. Mike Noel says you don't get a lot out of wilderness, it doesn't create a lot of jobs. Maybe Representative Noel doesn't realize that the Department of Natural Resources employs thousands of personnel. Without wilderness we would loose $376,492,000 on fishing activities and $274,426,000 on hunting activities, not to mention tourism brings 6.23 billion dollars to Utah each year. I believe Utah is one of the most beautiful places on this planet and we have the potential to have clean water, clean air, and have clean Industry. A quote from Chief Seattle of the Suqwamish and Duwamish tribes. "Continue to contaminate your own bed and one night you will suffocate in your own waste".
