Curtis Barney steps down as Panguitch's head girl's basketball coach. Coach Barney has served as a coach for 23 years. He started out as the boy's basketball coach for two years and got into girls basketball as an assistant for David Savage, where he served for three years. David Savage also coached volleyball. David stepped down eighteen years ago and Curtis took over as basketball and Troy Norris as volleyball coach, the rest is history. Coach Barney said he had a slow start for the first five years, but then the State Championships started happening. Curtis said that Heidi Miller, now Heidi Woolsey, the Wayne coach won the schools first girls championship in, I believe 1988. Coach Barney's teams have won 7 State Championships and had compiled 316 win and 113 losses, many of those losses came in the first years, record over the last eighteen years. He coached many State MVPs and many more All State players. This year's team came within one point of playing for another Championship, taking third place. Coach Barney was assisted for a number of years by Scott Christianson and then John Orton. This year Tammi Bennett has been added to the coaching staff. I feel the reason for all the success of the Panguitch, is the longevity of our coaches, which really takes a lot of fortitude, not with the kids, but with the parents. Coaching in small towns is really tough if you don't win it's like the pros your out and when you win it's because of the good players not the coaches. Unlike college, or private school up north you can't recruit, you have to play with the hand you are dealt, sometime that means playing with five players. All of our programs start out early in grade school, and by the time the students are in high school, they usually know if they have a love for the sport. Well Coach Barney you did well, good luck in what ever pursuit you undertake, you are too good, and too young, not to keep being involved with the students. This years sport programs with, baseball, volleyball, girl's basketball and boy's basketball has really been entertaining. I didn't say enough of how great the boys basketball team is in my last sport column. I can't remember ever seeing more of an entertaining group of players, that were led by seniors Brooks (it only took me a year to spell his name right) Leach and Eric (the dunker) Frandsen. Eric ended his career making two dunks in his last game. Brooks was a very tough inside player and Eric scored 38 points and had 18 rebounds against Wayne. You two will be missed by the school and by all of the Bobcats fans. This year;s team, like the girls, was one point away from the finals. All of Panguitch High School games were fun to watch and the town is real proud of you. Saturday March 13th was the Girls All-Star 1A-2A basketball game in Monroe, it was won by the lA team 69-64. Chelsie Barney scored 7 points for the lA team and Loni Allen from Piute was named MW. The University of Utah woman faced TCU the number one rated team in Mountain regional tournament in Vegas. Halie Sawyer had the game of her life, she shut down the MVP of the league and held her to 4 points. TCU averaged 70 points for the season but the Utes held them to 47 for the night. Halie scored a career high of 24 points and hadl 5 rebounds and she really dominated the MW and had many blocked shots. The Utes. went cold with 4 minutes left in the game with SDSC making up 8 points, after the Utes. missed two lay ups and the game went into overtime and the Utes came up short. This was their 4th game in 5 days. The Utes will be looking for an invitation to the NIT tournament. BYU, TCU and San Diego will all be going to the NCAA tournament. • a) Transportation --,, ?..5enior Programs LAP SWIM Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 6-7 am Tuesday: 6:30 - 7:30 pm Thursday: 5-6 pm Saturday: 8 - 9 am — •A Community Leader Sponsored by FIVE COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF GOVERNMENTS Human Services & Economic bevelopment GARFIELD COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY CAUCUS Garfield County Republican Party Caucus' will be held March 23rd, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the following locations: Antimony: Town Hall 134 North Highway 22 Boulder: Town Hall 351 North 100 East Bryce Canyon City: Ruby's Inn 1000 South Hwy 63 Cannonville: Post Office 25 South Redrock Drive Escalante: Community Center 85 North 100 West Hatch: Town Hall 49 West Center Henrieville: Town Hall (Old School) 70 West Main Panguitch 1: Panguitch High School 390 East 100 South Panguitch 2: Senior Citizens Center 87 North 40 West Ticaboo: unknown Tropic: Heritage Center 20 South Main Convention will be held April 28th, 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Center in Tropic.
