For example, high tunnels can allow tomatoes to be planted in March or April so that fruits begin to ripen by the end of June. Tomatoes can also be harvested 6 to 8 weeks longer in the fall. High tunnels allow farmers to supply tomatoes at times when they are in short supply and yield more fruit off the same amount of land. According to Dan Drost, Utah State University Extension vegetable specialist, the temporary, non-heated structures consist of a single layer of greenhouse-grade plastic that is supported over a PVC or galvanized steel frame. The tunnels are tall enough to walk in, can accommodate larger equipment and are suitable to a variety of crops. Often a sheet of plastic is placed over the plants inside the tunnel as a row cover to provide additional protection early and late in the season. "The tunnels allow farmers to start earlier and end later," said Drost. "They don't have to wait till May to start planting for the coming vegetable production season." In research studies conducted at Utah State University, Drost has been investigating growing methods for a variety of crops using high tunnels. One study examining early season tomatoes concluded that the net profit from a 14 x 96-foot structure was more than $1,700. Considering that 20 structures could fit on 1 acre of land, this brings the profit potential to between $30,000 and $40,000. These figures do not include the cost to take the vegetables to market and do not include the cost of the land. "High tunnels provide the potential for high profits on small farms, especially in urban areas," said Drost. "With a variety of products for sale, the opportunities look very promising. Conventional wisdom would say that farms must be large to be profitable. This research indicates that it is possible for farms to be profitable on just a few acres." As part of the upcoming 7th Annual Diversified Agriculture Conference in Vernal Feb. 24 to 26, Drost will present a half-day workshop on high tunnels. The workshop will highlight how high tunnels operate, describe a range of fruit and vegetables adapted to tunnels and include handson experiences related to tunnel construction. The conference will also have sessions on season extension and the USDA high tunnel program. To find out more about the Diversified Agriculture Conference and to register, visit www.diverseage.org . It will start at 5:00 to 7:00 pm, so you can still have time to make it to the Sound of Music. Advertising for the Quilt Walk Festival is at the printers, the Web page is up and running and The Quilt Walk Festival is less than 4 months away. Volunteers are always needed, so contact Pat, Elaine or Claudia and they will put you to work. When the flyers and the book markers come out with the advertising for the Quilt Walk Festival, take a good look, it is really an eye catcher. Nan Nay made the quilt that is used for advertising. Her quilt was voted "best of show" and the committee got to use a picture of it for advertising purposes. The committee would like to thank Shawn Caine for the Quilt Walk Festival designs, advertising and the website. She is a very big asset to the festival. Happy belated birthday Vee Worthen.
