On May 2nd in Salt Lake City, Coach Ray Englestead was honored as a "Coach of Merit" and inducted into the Utah Coaches Hali of Fame. Ray was born and raised in Panguitch, Utah. He was a three year starter in Basketball and was recognized as one of the outstanding players in the State. He graduated in 1941 from Panguitch High and in the fall enrolled at Branch Agricultural College (now SUU) where for two years he was an All Conference selection in Basketball. Ray next served in the Air Force from 1943 thru 1946 both in the States and overseas in the Philippines and New Guinea. He then attended Utah State Agricultural (now USU) and received his BS degree in 1948 and his MS degree in 1950. He started his coaching career at his old high school — Panguitch High in 1948 where he was the Basketball, Baseball, and Track Coach. He was soon lured to Carson City, Nevada and later to Cedar City, Utah, where he was involved in coaching a wide variety of sports. His teams were very successful and this success was instrumental in his being selected as Head Basketball Coach at Dixie Junior College in St. George, from 1957 thru 1962. In 1964 Ray was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Snow Junior College and continued in that capacity until 1968. He coached 5 Junior College All-Americans at these two outstanding schools. Ray then went full circle in his coaching career by returning to his Alma Mater, Panguitch High School where he coached until his retirement in 1978. His basketball teams won 4 Region Titles and finished 2nd in the State on one occasion. In 1970 his Cross Country team won the State title. Ray was especially fond and proud of the fact that about 40 of his former athletes went into the coaching profession. A great tribute to a great coach. As Ray arose to approach the Podium to accept his award and the accolades of all present, he was escorted by his long time friend and colleague Evan Excell of the Utah High School Activity Association, and his son Kay Englestead a long time successful coach himself. An interesting footnote to this article is the fact that Ray's long time close friend, Coach Tom Fullmer of Piute High School was also honored and inducted this night as was Cedar High School's Coach Richard Hobbs. The second half of a man's life is made up of nothing but the habits he has acquired during the first half.
