MikeJacobson Sports Writer pelled UVSC on an 11-0 run right before the half to give the Wolverines a 44-32 lead at intermission. In the second half, the Broncos played with a lot more intensity and passion, pushing the ball up-court consistently and pounding the ball inside, showing a much more physical style of playBut the Wolverine defense rose to the challenge, stopping the Broncos right in their tracks. Coach Nixon added, "We sustained things on the defensive end and gave ourselves a chance to win. I was really proud of our team-effort tonight and most importantly, we just got it done when we needed to." Both sides began to trade hoops back-and-forth as UVSC got the ball inside to their very own "Mailman," Robyn Fairbanks, and she delivered again and again. We sat down with MiJce Jacobsen, UVSC athletic director, and found out about the plans for football at our school. Q: Whatare your thoughts on UVSC "getting a football team? A: That's a big question. I've had thoughts on that for twenty years. I think it could be the best thing for our school and for our community for us to play football-to have something for our students to go to during the fall when they initially come to school and to have something to look at on the front page of the newspaper like the rest of the school's football teams. I think that that is the only thing missing, that UVSC needs and that it needs to be here. Q: How high on the agenda is it for you to get a football team here? A: That's a loaded question; and we've tried to get football here before, and for a bunch of different reasons it hasn't happened yet. It might be more realistic today than it has ever been. The problem with it is that we are working really hard and almost struggling with funding the current athletic programs that we already have, and we have 15 of them. With our NCAA transition and for us to take on the additional responsibility of football at this time, which it is quite expensive, the money is going to have to be there already in place. It can't be something that we'll have to worry about going out and raising each year. Q: You talked about how student fees will have to be increased, is that correct? A: That's correct. Q: How do you think students will feel about that? A: It's interesting because in the last five years, our students have been very much in support of what it is that we're doing athletically. In fact, this year our student fee for athletics is the largest in the state of Utah. It even goes up again next year, and it's going to be larger than what the major universities in the state already have. I know our students last year voted to where we are putting some money away right now for what we are referring to as a conference affiliation fee that can help us get into the conference. The base of that was for football and, yeah, I think that our students are very much in support of it. If we can show them that there is going to be a return and that it is a reality, then I think that athletics are a higher priority and I think they will support it. Q: We've heard that a plan is three to seven years away how long do you think it will be? A: That's a very good question. I don't know; there are things that could escalate the timing of football. Right now, there is no set time, no set date. But, like I said, we are putting this conference affiliation fee away and after a five-year period of time, it will give us a million and a half dollars. Now even though that might be what you could play football with today, in five years you maybe couldn't play for that. Our thought was, that most of the conferences that are expanding are looking for football schools. And if someone was interested in us and we were playing football then that would kind of expedite the process to starting football. We don't have a stadium, we don't have a locker room-we have nothing right now. But that is the way that we have started all of our programs...from nothing. So, that wouldn't be a new experience for us, but it would be an expensive experience to get those facilities in place. It takes a little time to have that opportunity. You .just can't buy the uniforms; the players will come but the facilities necessary won't come. Q: You would like to have the money in place. Where do you think that money will come from? A: It's got to come from multiple areas; it can't all come from one. The students will have to have a part in it, our school itself will have to have a part in it and to some extent the community needs to have a part in it. Because the day you have a home football game, it impacts everybody-all the restaurants, all the roads, the hotels and everything. There are a lot of people involved when you have football, and so that's Q: There is talk about plans why it is so important that to build a soccer and track the community will have to stadium. A: Absolutely; we're working very hard to put the funds together to build us a track facility. We have a great track program. We have outstanding student athletes in this program who are doing very, very well and it doesn't make sense for us to sponsor a program that we don't provide the facilities for. So, we're working very hard to put together a track facility. We could get started with the basics and then add on to it over a period of time. Whether soccer is part of that facility, we haven't made that decision for sure. I think that we've preferred to upgrade the soccer facility that we have now, and make it a better surface and put lights on it, and really escalate it rather than combine it with the track area. But once it's there, you can do a lot of different things with it. Q: When building that, would you build it with a plan in mind to expand it to football? A: Yeah, 1 think for sure that there would be football capabilities in that track facility. Q: How much talk has there been since last year when football was a big topic? A: Literally everyday somebody from the school or the community where I'm speaking asks about football. It's been that way for a long, a long time. It's not just the last little while; it's always been a number one conversation for a long time. As we've expanded, everyone automatically assumes that you're going to play football. That's the way that they approach it, "Now that you're division-I you're going to play football, right?" The two don't really go hand in hand; although, that's the perception of rhost people. A lot of people say, "You're school is 25,000; you need to be playing football, right?" Really, the size of your school has nothing to do with if you play football or not. Football is a part of most of your collegiate campuses in America. It would be great for UVSC to have football. Q: Last year, President Sederburg mentioned that one of the biggest problems would be community support and financial support. Will you get the support? A: That's a question that I have. I cannot figure out why the students don't attend the games. We have a great athletic program; our men's basketball is an outstanding program. I mention that because that is the next sport that people really rally behind; but for one reason or another, our students haven't elected to do that, even though we continue to win and play very good teams. And so that is a legitimate concern and I can see where he is coming from. He just came from Michigan where athletics is so big and everybody attends everything. There, it's a way of life; where in our area, everybody seems to be attached to one of the other schools in our area, if they grew up around here. Although you go to school here, many kids still attend their athletic games. It isn't in the immediate future but it looks like UVSC will have football down the road. |
