Road proves to be tough test for men's team Dave Gillespie Sports Writer The Wolverines are undefeated at home, but they traveled for four straight games. The road trip will test UVSC and answer some questions about what this team can do. The McKay Events Center has been a place where UVSC has dominated, only losing two games last year at home. The team has struggled on the road in recent years. Here is how they fared in the first two games of the long trip away. UVSC 77 Western Illinois 75 The UVSC men's basketball competed in two tough road games, beating the Western Illinois Leatherneck's 77-75 in the first. Although UVSC dominated all night, the Leatherneck's kept biting at the Wolverines- Not until Chris Bailey's two free throws with eleven seconds left, and a Western Illinois missed three pointer seven seconds later, could the Wolverines officially celebrate their first road win of the year. "This is a good win and I am happy for our players," UVSC Coach Dick Hunsaker said. "I knew it would be a fight. All road games are tough. We battled enough to earn the win. Coach Smith's teams are always going to compete hard." And fight they had to do, as UVSC held leads of 31-15 and 37-28 at halftime, and 75-66 with less than three minutes to play. But each lead was cut down by a Leatherneck rally. WIU was led by David Jackson with 21 points and Sammy Hunter who got 19. But in the end, the Wolverines proved too tough down the stretch to seal the win. Ryan Toolson had 16 points, David Heck added 14 while Bailey tallied 11 points and 5 assists. Southern Utah 68 Utah Valley State 60 Versus in-state rival Southern Utah University, UVSC out shot, out rebounded, recorded more assists, but still came up short, losing 68-60. What was the underlying key? The Wolverines shot themselves in the foot by giving the ball away 17 times, twice as much as the Sports on T. Thunderbirds. "Southern Utah was the aggressor, the better team, and they outplayed us tonight," UVSC Csoach Dick Hunsaker said. "That is a credit to their stiff defense. I give all the credit to SUU and Coach Evans' preparation." Swapping the position they held four days previous against Western Illinios, UVSC trailed most of the game, but kept fighting to keep it close in front of 2,329 T-Bird fans. The Wolverines only trailed by seven at the half, but SUU dominated the first portion of the second half to pull up by fifteen. But that lead wouldn't last as the Green and Yellow clawed its way back to within one point, as they went on a 21-7 run. Unfortunately. UVSC couldn't take the lead as Southern Utah hit its free throws down the stretch and ended the Wolverines quest for an upset. David Heck led the team in points with 24 and rebounds with six. Matt Peterson added 13 points for UVSC. UVSC returns home to play Utah State on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Light a fire in her.
