Show life B4 A Dead End Road "^^i^sf? MONDAY • DECEMBER 4 •2006 Video game review: Gears of War By Erik Frederickson S: Qarrett Larsen ;. Chapter 3: k Mirrored Reflection Where has the time gone? I've been doing homework for the last six hours, and I'm not even halfway done. I'm almost done with my history assignments, and then I've got chapters six and seven in Math. Ahhh! I forgot about thai Communications report. Damn, I haven't even started on that; I don't even know what I'm supposed to write this report on. I'm screwed! Man, yesterday was crazy. I've never done so much homework in my whole entire life. And today is going to be even worse. I have to do that extra credit assignment for History and Sociology, on top of everything else. I wonder if I had a bottle of Smirnoff if it would help me ease through these long hours of tedious school work? No, No, No, I can't. 1 have to finish this semester strong. Besides, I can wait two weeks till this semester is over to party. Wow, my eyeballs are throbbing and feel like they're going to pop out of my head. I've been studying for my finals for iwo days nonslop. My head hurts, it has so much stuff in it. If I con get an A on all of my finals, then I will have an A in every class, except Math, and that shouldn't be lower than a B+. Man, I'm happy thai I'm done with all my finals. I pulled it off. hell yeah! There is no way anyone will know Uiat I slacked uff and was partying for two months of the semester. I can't wait to go out tonight and celebrate this miracle I pulled off. Why wait till tonight. why not gel .started now? :•>••, "Rogers, what up7 1 pulled off a miracle and now it's time to celebrate." "Nice. Queens, cruise on over and let's get | this party started." .. .- '":. >••.,. "I'm already here, just pulling up now with^ a half gallon of good old Captain Morgan," "Nice. Queens, doors open." 'Tonight is a special night. I need something different than the usual, or to mix with the usual. You got any pain killers?" "Queens, today is your blessed day, open lhat drawer and grab that bottle. Take as many as you need! But be careful, 'cause we've already drunk half of this bottle, so don't take more than three or four." "Wow, Beau, how many did you lake?" "I took three or maybe four." "Are you stupid?... You should be all right though, but don't take any more." "It's all good man, I'm tired. I'm going to bed, I got work tomorrow. Mind if I sleep in your extra room?" "Go for it." x •s's "Beau, Beau, woke up! You're going to J be late for work. Beau, get up, it's almost ten.' Beau, Beau, Beau, gel up man, it's not funny. Man, you're scaring me. You're as pale as a ghosl. Beau, I'm calling 911!" "Nine-one-one, what's your emergency?" "I need an ambulance immediately, my friend mixed alcohol and pain killers last night; he's dead! He is as pale as a ghost and doesn't have a pulse. Send an ambulance immediately! It really shows that Microsoft spared no ex- <; pense on this proj- V ect. Everything has I realistic detail to it, from your weapons, to the wall and ground, to your enemies' skin; games have never looked better. Same thing goes for the game's sound, gunfire, explosions, voices, flesh being ripped apart - the sound for all of these is great. Unfortunately this game isn't all great, there are a few annoying and boring things to it. First off, when you saw up or blow away an enemy that's real close to you the screen gets covered in blood and you cant see anything. I mean yeah it looks cooi, but its not cool when its causes you to die. Second when I called my team to regroup just about every time I did it they never came. I'm not sure why? It was just real annoying. Third, the gameplay gets real dull real fast, its like real cool and all the first time through, but the second time its just old; the only really fun part is when you fight a Berserker. Fourth, and finally, the game is way, way, way too short! When it takes just three days to beat a game then you know you should of just rented it. Now what will Gears of War bring us in the future? Well, there will definitely be a sequel, and there will probably be a movie. In conclusion Gears of War is a fun actionfilled game with great visuals and sound and the only thing it is lacking is more then three days worth of gameplay. So where does Gears of War stand - is it a "leave it," "rent it," or "get it" game? It's a "rent it" game, because it is very fun and very short... its like it was made to be rented. Michael McBride Life Writer In Gears of War, humankind has been living on a planet named Sera for an unknown amount of time, however the action starts fourteen years after monsters called Locusts came up out of the ground and start a war for reasons which as of yet, remain unknown. The game's protagonist is Marcus Fenix former soldier and now inmate. However, since this war between Locusts and humans has dragged on for so long there are less people to fight, so at the game's commencement Fenix gets paroled and recruited into the army again. While playing, gamers will be able to do a number of different actions like running to the nearest cover, shooting while hiding, or simple evasive movements, etc. You'll get to use normal weapons like the ones in every game like this such as a magnum, shotgun, sniper rifle, machine gun, and grenades. The weapons that you wont see in any other game are the lancer that comes with a chainsaw bayonet that allows you to saw into any enemy your own size, the torque bow which fires an arrow that explodes seconds after impact, and the Hammer of Dawn which sends a signal to a satellite that fires a laser that you can control (which only works when your outside and when its day). In the multiplayer mode you and your friends can play as the human characters or the locusts characters. Multiplayer options include two teams that have up to four members, with one team having to be human and the other locust. The multiplayer is very fun, its similar to halo's multiplayer, but not as good. The most notable thing about this game is that the graphics in this game are bet- Wednesday, Dec. 6 Thursday, Dec. 7 Saturday, Dec. 9 Now through Dec. 23 Symphony Orchestra: David Fullmer @ Ragan Theater, 7:30 p.m. 863-6188 (Tickets @ Campus Connection) Choirs: Dyanne Riley, Constance Jensen @ Ragan Theater, 7:30 p.m. (Free admission) Dave Eaton Concert 9 p.m. @ 227 E. 300 North, Provo (Free admission) Polar Express Train @ Heber Valley Railroad Handel's MESSIAH @ Scera Center for the Arts-7:30 p.m. 745 S.
