Show life MONDAY* AUGUST 21 »2006 B9 UVSC's Fall theater preview Jason Pyles Life Writer The UVSC Theatre Department's 2006-2007 play season promises Shakespeare, musical drama, farces, experimental/contemporary, holiday, and student-producedproductions. Stephen Purdy, who chairs the Season Selection Committee with Elaine Hansen and Mandy Lyons, discussed this year's lineup with The College Times. "These are professionally directed and produced productions-quality plays that are really well done. We do not put on plays that are amateurish," Purdy said. When asked what criteria determine a play' s selection, Purdy explained that they considered plays that would have educational value and that would be useful in learning about playwriting, about theater, and what has been going on for the past several hundred years." Purdy said, The Queens of Birdland is an experimental reading of a play written by Professor James Arlington and his brother who interviewed many "rock divas" like Madonna, Marian Carey, and Tina Turner. With that information, they're putting together a play which fo- cuses on rock divas of past generations. It will not be a full production, but will be free for the audience and will have a question-and^ answer session afterward." The Queens of Birdland: The Diva Diaries - September 22 and 23, at 7 p.m. in the Ragan Theatre. (Free Admission). "Nunsense is a musical comedy that people generally enjoy because it takes a tragic situation-like five nuns trying to raise money to bury their sisters who were accidentally poisoned by the convent cook-and makes it a little more light-hearted," Purdy said. .Nunsense — October 26 through November 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theatre (excluding Sunday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 31). "I think The Tempest is going to be a very interesting portrayal," Purdy explained, "because its director, Chris Clark, does some very imaginative development of Shakespearean plays." The Tempest—November 30 through December 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the UVSC Black Box Theatre (excluding Sunday, December 3). Purdy said that The Farley Family Christmas is going to be a little different because there are going to be some other charac- ters introduced this year. The Farley Family Christmas—December 11, 14, 15, 16 and 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theatre. "I'm excited about the farces Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii and Tons of Money. Farces are really difficult to act because there's so much involved with timing and characterization that it's more than just people getting up and goofing around," Purdy said. Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii and Tons of Money—January 22 through February 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theatre (excluding Sunday, January 28). Note: These two will play on alternating nights. Purdy confessed that his sentimental favorite would probably be O Pioneers/ "It's a very touching, powerful story based on a book by Willa Cather that's about pioneers in Nebraska during the late 1800's who are Norwegian immigrants struggling to win the land, and in particular," Purdy continued, "the story of a woman who's trying to do this." O Pioneers!—March 1 through March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre (excluding Sunday, March 4). "Throughout the year in scriptwriting classes, scripts are written and revised by students for ten-minute plays," Purdy said. "The 'Short Attention-Span Theatre' is our student, written, directed and performed presentations (with faculty mentoring and supervision)," Purdy explained. Short Attention-Span Theatre—April 5 through April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre (excluding Sunday, April 8). "These plays are not yet cast," Purdy said. "We will hold our auditions on August 30th, 6 pm in the Black Box Theatre. Any student who is interested should come with two contrasting monologues to perform, one minute each, or a monologue and a musical presentation, one minute each," Purdy said. Play tickets are $6 for UVSC students, $8 for faculty and seniors, $10 general admission. Ticket sales begin two weeks before each opening night. Watch for more details at www.uvsc.edu.
