The loss will push Utah State to a 3-23 record overall and 2-14 in the WAC. They will go into the tournament in the ninth seed and will play Idaho on Tuesday in Reno, Nev. Utah State was led by Taylor Richards who scored 14 points and had two assists. Danyelle Snelgro followed behind with 11 points and a team best of 7 rebounds. Snelgro was also named to the Women's WAC AllFreshman team. "We struggled getting some scoring," head coach Raegan Pebley said. "Defensively we showed some moments where we played them very well, but overall we struggled." Utah State shot only 25 percent from the field and 61.3 from the free-throw line. The Spartans shot 49 percent from the field and 68.4 from the line. No other Aggie scored in double figures, but Jenny Gross chipped in eight points and six rebounds. Ashley Rutledge added five points and matched a career-high with six rebounds for the third time in the last four games. The Aggies then traveled to Salt Lake for a pair of matches against host team Utah and the University of Portland on Friday and Saturday. In Friday's match against the Utes, the Aggie women got offto a bad start, losing all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 doubles spot for USU, the team of Bennion and Barker were able to push the Ute's Elizabeth Ferris and Cinthia Saucedo to a tiebreak, but lost, 8-7(1). In singles, USU s Anderson continued her winning streak, beating Saucedo, 6-4,6-2. All of the other five singles matches for the Aggies were straight-set losses. Saturdays match pitted the Aggies against the Pilots of the University of Portland. Though the end result appears lop-sided, the match was quite hard-fought throughout. In doubles, the Aggies' Bennion and Barker defeated Portland's Lindsey Griffin and Katie Kennel, 8-5, while at the No. 2 spot, Smith and Monson beat Portlands Laura Leoni and Jaclyn Soltysik. The Aggies' only doubles loss came at the No. 3 spot where Anderson and Nelson lost, 8-6, to Portlands tandem of Anna Gullickson and Jenna Tanzer. In singles, three of the six matches went the full three sets with two of those being decided in "super set" format where the players play to 10, winning by two. At the No. 1 spot for the Aggies, Bennion defeated Griffin, 7-6, 6-3. At No. 2, Smith took Portlands Cristin Sammis to a third set before winning. USU's Anderson pushed her winning streak to seven matches and her singles record to 12-2 in her victory over Soltysik at the No. 3 spot. This will be the team's second tournament of the Spring 2006 season. The 20 team field is made up of Boise State, Cal-Poly, Cal-State Northridge, Gonzaga, Idaho State, Jacksonville, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Pennsylvania, Portland, Sacramento State, San Diego, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara, host UC-Riverside, Utah, Utah State, and Weber State. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. The course is 7,003 yards with a par of 72. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Scheduled to compete in the tournament for USU are Brendon Ehlers, Preston Otte, Brett Black, Jake Blair, and Justin Copier. This marks the second year in a row that the Aggies will compete at the Braveheart Classic. Last year they were led by Cody Huot and placed 15th in a field of 19 teams. "The players put in a lot of work driving to Ogden a few times a week to practice," USU Coach Dean Johansen said. "This is the hardest course we play. It's a good quality course. We are excited to get down there and see some green grass." In their last tournament of the Spring season, the Aggies placed eighth in a field of 13 teams at the Pat Hick's Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. Brett Black led Utah State tying for 16th with an overall score of 144 in the two-round 36-hole tournament. Preston Otte leads the Aggies with an average score of 73.64 this year. |
