Despite only five second-half field goals, the Utah State men's basketball team beat the San Jose State Spartans 61-58 in its final home game of the season. The Aggies shot only 36.7 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from behind the arc in the game, but they were BY JOEY HISLOP Staff Writer The USU women's tennis team lost back-to-back matches to Nevada and Utah this past weekend before ending their three-match stint with a 6-1 victory over Portland Saturday night in Salt Lake City. The Aggie women, now at 6-8 after Saturdays win, began their weekend action on Thursday with a close 43 loss at home to the Wolf Pack of Nevada who came into Logan having won four straight. In that match, the Aggies were able to take the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, but came out on the losing end after dropping four of the six singles matches. Posting singles wins for the Aggies were senior Jill Smith, who beat Nevada's Kristen Davenport, 6-4, 6-4, and junior Courtney Anderson, who beat Nevada's Myriam Bouchiaka, 6-1, 6-2. In the rest of Thursday's action, Aggie singles No. 1 Lindsey Bennion lost to Nevada's Caroline Bailly, 6-1, 6-0 while at the No. 4 spot, freshman Dee Dee Nelson split the first two sets of her match with Nevada's BachLan Pham, 6-2, 2-6, before losing in the third, 6-3. Aggie senior Andrea Barker came up short at the No. 5 spot, losing 6-4, 6-1 to Nevada's Fiorella Velez. At the No. 6 spot, junior Lauren Monson also lost to Nevada's Nawchali De Silva, 6-1, 7-6(3). •TENNIS see page 10 Gymnasts fall to SUU BY ANDREA EDMUNDS Sports Editor Coming off a home loss to Sacramento State only one week before the Utah State gymnastics squad finished second to Southern Utah, the No. 1 team in the WAC, Friday night in in Cedar City with a score of 192.650. Despite a third-place finish in the all-around by junior Meagan Lewis, the Aggies couldn't top the Thunderbirds for the second time this season. The last time the 3Oth-ranked Aggies faced No. 27 SUU was in Salt Lake at the University of Utah when the Thunderbirds overcame the Aggies 193.175-192.675. Lewis had a season-high 38.550, finishing one place ahead of teammate Jessica Parenti. The Aggies, third-place team in the WAC, scored the highest on the bars, with three of the Aggies finishing in the top five. Lewis finished in a tie for fifth with USU's Meagan Tschida while Alex Martin finished in a tie for second. Parenti led the way in the vault, finishing second with a 9.8 not far behind Southern Utah's Rachel Tanner. Parenti also finished 10th in the bars, 11th on the beam and fourth on the floor exercise. On the beam, freshman Brittany Price had the strongest performance for USU, coming in second with a score of 9.725. Snelgro was the only Aggie honored as the league announced its first and second teams, all-defensive team and all-freshman teams. The teams are voted on by the WAC coaches. The freshman guard from Altadena, Calif. (John Muir High School), is currently averaging 4.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game heading into the WAC Tournament. She has increased those numbers in WAC play to 5.3 and 3.3 while starting 11 of the 16 league games. Snelgro has come on even stronger in the latter part of the season and in fact has averaged 7-9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in the last nine games. She has scored in double-figures in five of the last nine games, including an 11-point game in USU's last outing at San Jose State on Saturday. She also added a season-high tying seven rebounds in that game.
