Show THE U'S TOP 5 ATHLETES BY GRIFFIN ADAMS /SPORTS EDITOR BY RYAN MILLER /ASST. SPORTS EDITOR PHOTOS BY CHRIS AYERS n honor of the Best of the U issue, the sports desk at The Daily Utah Chronicle picked five of the best athletes at the U. 1.Georgia Dabritz The senior gymnast is a 10-time All-American, a threetime NCAA Regional champion and a four-time Pac-12 champion. She has scored six career 10s, three this season. She is simply one of the best athletes in the country, let alone the school. 2. Delon Wright With all due respect to Larry Krystkowiak, Wright has almost single-handedly revived the Runnin' Utes basketball program in his two seasons as a Ute. This year, the point guard is at the top of the watch lists for a number of national awards as Utah sits at No. 13 heading towards the end of the season. Additionally, Wright leads the Utes in a number of categories, including points, assists and steals. 3. Devontae Booker Booker seemingly came out of nowhere for Utah last season, claiming the lead back spot in the fourth game of the season. The junior had six games where he went over 100 yards, including a 229 yard performance against Oregon State. For the season, Booker rushed for 1,512 yards and 10 touchdowns and was, at times, the Utes' only true offensive threat. 4. Niklas Persson Persson didn't need much time to make his presence known on the Utah ski team, earning All-American honors as a freshman when he finished in fifth place at the NCAA Championships. The nordic skier improved upon that his sophomore year, finishing in third place in the 10-kilometer classical race at the NCAA Championships. Now, Persson is enjoying early success in the 2015 campaign as he just earned his second podium finish at the Seawolf Invitational. .11 5. Rhianna Williams Not many people know of Williams in the Salt Lake community, but she may be the most athletic of all the student-athletes on campus. As a member of both the swimming and track teams, Williams balances two physically demanding sports when most struggle to handle one. For instance, Williams will compete in two conference championships this weekend in her separate sports, all in a span of a few days. g.adams@chronicle.utah.edu @GriffDoug r.miller@chronicle.utah.edu @millerjryan . 14 { THECHRONY I NEWS I OPINION I ARTS I SPORTS I WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2014 } |
