Show BY JULIANNE SKRIVAN /STAFF WRITER PHOTOS BY KIFFER CREVELING o make up for the thousands of dollars spent on tuition, there are certain perks of being a U student that can save you money. One of those benefits is food. By showing your UCard at Red Robin, for example, you can get a 15 percent discount. Mariya Nikolaeva, an undeclared sophomore, loves this part of being a U student. "Food discounts are a huge incentive to go to a certain place," she said. "I'm more inclined to use my UCard on a food discount then anywhere else:' Those at the U also receive discounted transportation through UTA with their student fees, offering options such as TRAX and Frontrunner. Because the U is a commuter school, many students use this to get to campus. With your UCard you can also receive a discount at different shops, including 10 percent off at Francesca's in Gateway and 10 percent off at Alex and Ani, a bracelet store in City Creek. "I had no idea so many stores offered a discount,' Nikolaeva said. U students can also sign up for Amazon Student for discounts on textbooks and free twoday shipping. Nick Riccardi, a senior in video game design, uses the site for school purchases. "It's a great way to get free shipping, and textbooks are usually marked down by a lot': Riccardi said. The Wasatch Mountains in Utah are another perk of coming to the U. And local ski resorts, T THE PERKS OF BEING A U STUDENT including Snowbird and Brighton, offer a variety of discounts on season passes and day tickets as a result "Skiing and snowboarding is the reason a ton of my friends came to the U," Riccardi said. "Of course they want to go [skiing], but it is expensive to pay for a day, and an entire season is a hefty investment. The discount is a great way to allow students to be a little closer to being able to afford stuff like that" Riccardi said that's just one of the best benefits of attending the U but appreciates the opportunity to save money. "As students we are already shelling out a huge amount of money and studying incredibly hard': Riccardi said. "We're completely dedicated to school — having the discount is a great way to feel rewarded for just being a student" j.skrivan@chronicle.utah.edu @JulianneSkrivan BY MARYROYAL /STAFF WRITER PHOTO BY KIFFER CREVELING he Student Life Center may be one of the newest buildings on campus, but it has quickly become a favorite. Since the center opened its doors on Jan. 12 a steady flow of students have been coming in and out. Ying Tan, a sophomore in sociology and marketing, goes to the center often, and she particularly likes the rock climbing wall. "When you walk inside of the Student Life Center, it's like you are in a completely different world','Tan said. "You leave the world of books and tests and deadlines behind, and you walk through the doors and have a place to exercise and let go of the stress:" Among the amenities offered at what students consider "the best building on campus" are indoor and outdoor leisure pools, a 15,000-square-foot fitness center and five sport courts. The facility is also designed with relaxation space. Freshens Café, which serves fruit crepes, is located inside the building, and there's a fire pit with lounge chairs outside. Allen Martinez, a freshman in finance, said the fitness center at the building is useful for fulfilling New Year's resolutions. "If I have free time between classes, I head over to the fitness center to get a good workout in," he said. "They have everything you could possibly want. On days that I have had a tough day in class, I'll go for a run on the track, and it always helps to clear my head." Martinez also said the center is in a convenient place. Located on the west side of Legacy Bride, the center is an easy walk for students living in the residence halls or riding TRAX. Polly Creveling, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, T THE PLACE TO 13s loves to take advantage of the swimming pools on the lower level of the building. "They really went above and beyond with the swimming options in this building," she said. "The people who planned the building made a smart move when they created leisure pools separate from the 50-meter pool. People who want to hang out can do so without getting in the way of those of us who want to swim laps. It's perfect." m.royal@chronicle.utah.edu @mary_royal #DoYouKasasa? Pass i+ Professor Funk inspires students BY CHRISTINE KANNAPEL /STAFF WRITER PHOTO COURTESY OF PROFESSOR JOHN FUNK he U has plenty of accomplished and top-rate professors, but according to ratemyprofessors.com , John Funk is the best of them all. Funk is the dean of the College of Education and a professor n educational psychology through the Urban Institute for Teacher Education. From getting his master's in early childhood education at the U to his 25 years of teaching public school, Funk has made a study and a passion out of teaching. He received the Distinguished leaching Award in 2010 as recognition for this. "When I was getting my master's, I was discouraged," Funk said. "Some professors were some of the most boring human Beings I had met. I thought, this person teaching me to be a :eacher is a terrible model, and so I decided I had to teach :eachers the right strategies myself." Funk has focused on strategy in teaching and maintaining :he interest of his audience throughout his career. He began :eaching in Granite School District and supervised Head Start, a program that supports mental and emotional development in children, while teaching evening classes at the U. Funk's focus as on children's literature, so he spent time teaching kindergarten and first grade. He's applied what he learned there to his :lasses at the university. T "I make it different each week," Funk said. "I don't just do lectures, I do hands-on techniques. I have found that college students respond as positively as children." Maintaining focus in the classroom is a big priority for Funk, but so is relationship building. Connections with his students is a priority, whether it's helping them to understand a topic or working around any of their life issues that conflict with school. John Tolokan, a senior in elementary education, has experienced Funk's teaching methods first-hand. "The qualities that I admire in John include his teaching abilities, his knack for problem-solving and his overwhelming patience with students and pre-teachers alike," Tolokan said. Tolokan said that Funk's teaching strategies are admirable in the classroom. Tolokan was unsure about his future in teaching, but he said Funk helped by showing him the importance of teaching. Demi Brog, a senior in elementary education, is in Funk's cohort for her Elementary Education Licensure Program. She said many times she's had questions about the best strategies in teaching, and Funk always answers them. "He is an inspiration to all of us," Brog said. "He pushes us to be the best teacher we can be and to provide the best education for elementary education students." c.kannapel@chronicle.utah.edu @chriswritine 4 { THECHRONY I NEWS I OPINION I ARTS I SPORTS I WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2015 } on everyday debit card purchases - It's no loophole.
