Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 BASKETBALL continued from Page 7 to one at the r2-minute mark, the smallest margin since the score was 12-11 in the first half. From that point on, Stanford, seemingly sensing the momentum shifting to Utah's side for the first time in the game, overpowered the Utes, opening a 15-point lead late in the game. "We adjusted, I thought rather quickly on the offensive end in the second half," said head coach Anthony Levrets. "I was pleased. Not pleased with the outcome, but I'm pleased with the progress of our team." Both teams struggled to score in the slow-paced first half. Harrison and Wicijowski were kept off the score sheet before halftime, which helped limit the Utes to just 19.2 percent shooting in the opening period. Wicijowski said the Utes got caught up in the moment a little bit at the beginning of the game. "I think it was just nerves," she said. "Playing this kind of caliber team makes you a little nervous. We had open opportunities—it wasn't that we weren't shooting good shots, but we just couldn't hit them." The Utes were plagued by Stanford's size, as well as its double teams down low, which confused Utah by bringing in the second defender from different places. Utah had planned on working the ball into the post offensively early in the game but instead was forced to settle for outside shots. "It took us out of our early stuff that we wanted to run," Levrets said. "They're so long and so big, it's hard to get in there." The Utes now head to Cancun, Mexico, for the Caribbean Challenge, which begins Thursday against Penn State. "That just comes with the position," Wynn said. "I get too much credit when we win and too much blame when we lose. That's just how it is. You've got to have thick skin." j.hibbard@ chronicle.utah.edu CIRO UP the Coughs It's Rivalry Week Novem er 22-27! In their final home game, seniors reach milestones Jake Bullinger STAFF WRITER It was a day of milestones for the Utah seniors as volleyball defeated TCU 3-1(25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15) in the final home match of the season. "We were all ready to play and excited for today," said head coach Beth Launiere. "It was an emotional match for us today and it's been an emotional weekend knowing that this celebration was coming up. We made it about our seniors today and getting this win." Keisha Fisher broke the school's all-time digs record with her 19-dig performance. She has 1,576 career digs, five more than previous record holder Connie Dangerfield. "It's an honor, because Connie was someone I looked up to," Fisher said. "She was like our sister when we came in our freshman year...to beat her record is amazing." The senior libero has 466 digs this season, which is 19 shy of Dangerfield's single-season record of 484 digs in 2007. Stephanie Neeley eclipsed the 3,000-assist mark as she dished out 49 assists. Neeley also added 19 digs, tying Fisher for the match high. She now has 3,016 career assists. "To be honest, I didn't even know I was that close (to 3,000)," Neeley said. "You don't really worry about that stuff. You just worry about the team numbers and the team winning." Rounding out the milestone-reaching seniors was Karolina Bartkowiak. She finished the match with 13 kills, pushing her into the school's Top-Io career kills list. Bartkowiak has 1,o97 kills, just 13 shy of Debbie GibbySmith, who sits at No. 9 on the school list. Utah's seniors garnered the limelight, but a pair of Ute freshmen paced the offense. Morgan Odale had a team-high 16 kills on a .389 attack percentage. Erin Redd trailed Odale with 14 kills and led the team with a .5oo hit percentage. TCU outside hitter Irene Hester, the Mountain West Conference's leader in kills per set, led the Horned Frogs with 12 kills, but only hit .143 in the process. Offense paved the way for Utah's 25-19 set one victory. The Utes butchered the TCU defense as they hit .353 in the set and pounded 16 kills. Bartkowiak and Odale had five and four kills, respectively. The Utes held TCU to a a15 attack percentage and contained Hester to just two kills in the set. Utah kicked off the second set with a 9-o run as its defense took over the set. TCU could only manage to hit .o81 and tally eight kills as Hester once again struggled with just one kill. The Utes slipped late in the set as TCU cut the lead to 22-17, but Utah scored the final three points following a timeout to seal the set 25-17. Brooke McAlister scored two of the Utes' final three points and had six kills in the set. TCU posed a challenge in the third set. Yvonne Igodan's block gave TCU an 18-17 lead, its first lead of the match. The teams had three lead changes until TCU finally ended the set with a 25-23 set victory. Utah returned to form and took the final set easily, 25-15. Redd, Bartkowiak and Odale combined for ro kills as the Utes easily buried the Horned Frogs. The normal celebration of victory was drowned by the euphoria of the seniors' milestones. "At one point, there was Neeley's 3,000th assist, then Bartkowiak got into the school's Top-io list for kills, and then Keisha became the all-time dig leader five minutes later," Launier said. "That was a special moment for our team and for our seniors." j.bullinger@ chronicle.utah.edu Milestones reached in match BEAT BYU PEP RALLY Monday, November 22 Noon -1:15 p.m. — Marriott Plaza • Coach Whit and the Football Team • Marching Utes • Utah Cheerleaders • Free Dogs and Chili • Rivalry Roll for FREE Tuition, 11:30 a.m. (Buy balls for $3 at www.alumni.utah.edu, U Campus Store, Alumni House) • Design your own Rivalry T-Shirt • Free Ute Stuff ONLINE AUCTION Bidding opens at midnight on November 12, ends November 27 at 11:59 p.m. Place your bids online at alumni.utah.edu .
