The Utes (o-5-o) lost to Loyola Marymount (3-i-o) Friday, followed by Saint Mary's (4-o-o) on Sunday. "I think we played hard," said junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen. "We have been losing, but this team has the most heart." Despite failing to score a goal, Utah outshot Loyola Marymount 25-12, though only II were on goal. "Once again, I was proud of the team and the way our players battled," said head coach Rich Manning. "We played a really strong second half and did a lot of good things. We are playing with so much heart right now, but we just aren't finding the net." Both of the Lions' goals came in the first half. Turpen initially deflected a shot from the 18 in the 28th minute, but Marymount's Tata Gilmer volleyed the ball into the net from inside the penalty box. Marymount scored again just three minutes later, when Tawni Martino shot the ball past Turpen after a cross from the right sideline. The Utes played a much stronger game in the second half and controlled the majority of the possession. Defenders Lauren Dudley, Lauren Porter and Morgan Skeen took nine shots on key runs up the sidelines. NATHAN SWEET/The Daily Utah Chronicle Soccer head coach Rich Manning talks to the team at the end of Friday's game. The soccer team has scored a only one goal for the first six games it has played this season. "When things aren't quite going your way, you tend to approach everything with a little less confidence," Manning said. "But I know that as we go forward those shots will go in." Sunday's game against Saint Mary's was also disappointing, as Utah struggled to score, finishing with just six shots on goal. After Saint Mary's initial goal in the 53rd minute, the Utes' game fell apart. "This is our most disappointing game," Manning said. "We didn't give ourselves the chance to come back and win." Utah controlled game play the majority of the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Gaels nine to two. The midfield held off most of the offensive plays by Saint Mary's, which started in the 4-5a defensive-minded formation. (AP) — Kellen Moore hit Austin Pettis with a 13yard touchdown pass with 1:09 left and No. 3 Boise State passed what might be its toughest test of the season, beating No. io Virginia Tech 33 3o on Monday night. The Broncos (i-o) came to FedEx Field with their best preseason ranking ever and ran out to a 17-o lead in the first quarter, then had to rally themselves to extend their winning streak to 15 games. Tyrod Taylor passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards for the Hokies (o-i), who for the fourth straight season took a deflating early season loss. As for the Broncos, even with II games left in the season, the debate will start about whether they should become the first team from a conference without an automatic BCS bid to play for a national championship if they go undefeated. Moore threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Before boarding the plane to Chicago for the Northwestern Challenge, to say Karolina Bartkowiak was excited for her "homecoming" would be an understatement. Little did she know that she would lead the Utes to a tournament championship and garner the Challenge's MVP award before flying back to Salt Lake City. Near her hometown of Aurora, Ill., Bartkowiak put up her best performances of the season, paving the way for Utah to go 2-I in the Evanston, Ill., tournament. Bartkowiak's 38-kill performance during the weekend represented how Utah, for the first time this season, did not rely on a young player to step up and lead the team to victory. "Our upperclassmen started to take charge, and we really needed that," said head coach Beth Launiere. Utah didn't start off the tournament in the way it had hoped. The volleyball team won't have another home game until Sept. 23. lthough it doesn't mean much for the BCS bid the Mountain West has struggled to earn for so long, the conference's "big three" provided a reminder that, for one final season, they stand together in the fight against the BCS. Everything changed this offseason. Utah is headed to the Pac-io, BYU will test the waters of independence, and TCU got left behind to muddle in the MWC. Instead of serving as the plucky outsider, Utah will be part of the BCS. BYU will try to break into the BCS on its own, and TCU will still be hoping it can run through its schedule unscathed for a reward of BCS scraps.
