Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 4 HOSPITAL not have done as well in other situations," Kraiss said. Normal operating rooms use portable imaging machines, which often do not provide a clear image, or surgeons do not get pictures of what they actually want to see. This can cause them to be less precise with the wires, catheters and stents, increasing the risk that something might be placed in the wrong spot, Kraiss said. To avoid that situation, surgeons split the surgery into two parts, image in the radiology department and then move the patient into the OR, but doing continued from Page 1 Vascular surgery, or surgery on blood vessels, often needs to be done through an open incision, though there are other parts of the procedure that need to be done with wires, catheters and stents. In order to see what is happening with these tools, the surgeon needs imaging equipment; to do an open surgery, the surgeon needs the OR. "It's allowed us to do surgeries that we probably could Fiv 221 S.1300 E. fresh Salt Lake City eat 582-5001 B ,, $5.00 Footlongs so is inconvenient and undesirable for patients, he said. The new hybrid OR brings both technologies together in one location, eliminating the problem of having to either move rooms or have poor image quality, Kraiss said. The room also allows doctors to do a whole range of surgeries, such as endovascular surgery, aneurysm surgery and open heart surgery. In May, Kraiss used the hybrid OR to perform surgery on Marty Cranfill-Morton, a patient who has Takayasu's arteritis, a rare disease that restricts the blood flow to her arms, he said. CranfillMorton had previously had grafts inserted into her aorta to increase the blood flow, but scarring had begun to block the flow of blood. Kraiss and his team of surgeons, guided by the new imaging machine, inserted two balloons into each of her elbows and then inflated them in her aorta. Both balloons needed to be inflated at the same time because if one side is inflated and the other is not, it can squeeze the other side shut, he said. Also, if a graft ruptured, surgeons would have to go in and perform open heart surgery, which they would not have been able to do in the radiology center. After successfully inflating both balloons at the same time, surgeons inserted two stents, Kraiss said. Inserting the stents also would have Tuesday, September 7, 2010 posed a problem in a normal OR because of the location of the vascular system in which the surgery was performed. If the stent had gotten incorrectly inserted, then the stent could have ended up somewhere else in the body, which would have been a serious complication. "The use of that room basically allowed us to do that procedure successfully," Kraiss said, stating that the procedure could have been done in a normal OR, but it would have been clunky and had some potential danger. "Having this really highquality imaging helped us to be very precise and minimize the chance of a complication occurring." The imaging machine, which sits in the corner of the OR, is controlled by a joystick that moves and rotates the arm around the patient's body, Kraiss said. It is computerized, that it will remember the position the surgeon told it to go to. If the surgeons need it to go back to that exact position two hours later, they can tell it to do so. The hybrid OR and the stateof-the-art imaging machine solve the problem better than anything else, Kraiss said. "The university has always been a place where cuttingedge technology has been applied to medical problems," he said. d.rafferty@ chronicle.utah.edu OFF CAMPUS SITE LOCATED AT 3RD AND GIIII,NUES ‘4./4,45.0■ey,474 Every Day Value Menu Meatball Marinara Cold Cut Combo Spicy Italian Veggie Delite Black Forest Ham Tuna • BLT 0* • Oven Roasted Chicken Breast Valid At: St • 221 S. 1300 E. 200 South N www subway com O C=0 7 582-5001 See Our Other Locations: 1314 S.
