"It's crazy, man,"* said Smith, who comes from predominantly UCLA territory in Pasadena. "People that don't even watch football get into it. The. fans, players and coaches—everybody is excited and intense. We walk around and feel that intensity and it makes it that much more fun." U quarterback Brian Johnson said the rivalry with BYU has had far-reaching effects, extending into his own family. "(BYU receiver) Michael Reed is my cousin," Johnson said. "So yeah, we give each other a hard time about it." Indeed, the rivalry pervades just about anyone who ventures within the Salt Lake and Utah valleys. Even journalistic integrity is subject to the "Holy War's" influence. "BYU's biggest rival is forward-thinking," Burton said. "There are a lot of people that UTAH continued from Page 5 CONFERENCE continued from Page 3 Mountain West Conference foes are starting to dread facing Utah and BYU, whether on the road or at home. In many sports, the two teams are played back-to-back on consecutive nights. That is often the case in volleyball. Visiting teams will play in Salt Lake City on a Friday night, then travel to Provo to play the Cougars on Saturday. The trip's difficulty is exacerbated by the fact that both teams consistently compete for the conference title. No fewer than 15 Cougars "It's as tough as it gets in this conference," said Pat Stengle, Wyoming volleyball head coach. "To face those two teams on back-to-back nights on the road with the team worn out, it's really difficult to get wins. I haven't won a game (in Utah) since I started coaching here." Hill credits BYU and Utah's dominance to their superior offerings to recruits. "These two schools are great universities, and they have some of the best facilities and coaches," Hill said. "Fortunately, that has produced some great recruiting classes." c.bnmner@ for a ludicrous system. Would Utah have taken out Southern Cal? I'm not sure, but 2004 defensive tackle Steve Fifita is. Editorial Editor in Chief take this game very seriously, but most people enjoy just a good, spirited competition," Miles said. "It's not something we need to call out the dogs for." The Nov. 24 contest will be the last of six home games for BYU this season, fiveof which sold out. Despite the addition to their workload and the stress that goes along with hosting the state's biggest game. Miles and his staff are looking forward to feeling their stadium shake under the feet of 64,300 of the some of the most intense sports fans in the world. "It's fun to have it at our place," Miles said. "It's gonna be full, it's gonna be loud." e.williams@chronicle.utah.edu "I don't feel like there was anyone in the nation that could have beaten us," Fifita said. I would love to see Smith, Paris Warren and Steve Savoy toy with the '84 Cougar defense, much like they did Pitt. Meyer was calling trick plays late in the game just to keep Utah fans who made the trip to* Tempe, Ariz., from falling asleep. Speaking of sleep, why don't you BYU lovers just a take a nap to calm down?
