This Saturday, when Utah State hosts Pacific in the home opener, the modern student regime will be out to dramatically impose a new image on the old guard with ai array of lassies, tartans, kilts and other Scottish regalia. The performance is likely to cause still more resentment from old Aggie alums. It is human nature to rebel iAainst changes. This is especially true when nostalgic emotions of the past are upset. It is a reaction to be expected. In fact, it would cast a shadow on the loyalty of any old alum who did not react. haps the first catcher ever to pull off the hidden ball trick, but no one except Babe Ruth has ever been able to make them disappear like Willie Mays. Look For Happy Medium It is amazing, though, how old grads who have witnessed the most revolutionary changes in history of mankind, and who strive to stay abreast modern advances in their professions and businesses rebel when they think someone is trying to rob them of a few precious memories. Yet, they are the first to resent aspersions that their alma mater is still in the academic doldrums. Looking at modern reality, Utah State has broadened its academic scope to where the school of agriculture is one of the lesser fields of endeavor. This did not happen because educators set out to deliberately kill agricultural studies at Utah State. It was imposed on Ui ah State by an student learning desire and a diminishing demand for agriculture and related subjects. In other words. Utah State either had to broaden its academic offerings or go out of busi- first-plac- ever-broadeni- ng ness. In light of this, it is just as unfair for the old Aggie guard to impose limitations of the past on a modern student body as it is for the present campus to think it should completely sever all past tra- dition. There has to be a happy medium. The Aggie Highlander move did not take place overnight. In light of the tremendous change in Utah States academic personality, it seems rather archaic that the modern campus should be hobbled by academic limitations of the past. This is not to say that all of the tremendous Utah State tradition should be divorced from the present. But those who propose the new image believe it is possible to combine past tradition and present reality. So does this writer. Utah State is no longer the A.C. (Agricultural College). Yet, take it from someone who has an offspring at Utah State, it is amazing the number of people in Beehive territory who still call U3U the A.C. and still believe its academic scope is limited to agriculture and related subjects.
