This axiom of the angling world could iequire, especially in the heat of August, going to nymphs. Fish may pass up bait and lures now but stomach analysis indicates they seldom abandon the imma-tur- e insects. They may comprise as much as 0 cent of a trouts diet. per However, nymph fishing demands some techk anniques unfamiliar to the average gler. While dry fly purists may refuse to cast when trout arent rising on top, most anglers agree it requires far more skill to properly fish an underwater offering than one on the surface. For one thing fish have better vision down deep in their feeding lanes. They can examine the offering more closely, and if it doesnt match what they have been taking, then the angler may get no more than casting practice. Tt takes longer to determine which nymph they are feeding on, and simulate it. g fish also requires Hooking a more skill than a fish which announces its presence on top. A nymph strike, since the pattern is down near the fish, may consist of nothing more than a stopped leader. After many strikes, the angler learns to distinguish between the heavier stop of a snag, and the delicate take of a trout. In addition to the fly getting a close scrutiny from selective trout, especially the larger ones, leader comes under close surveilance. lighter the leader the more likely fish are to not see it, or at least not see all of it, If the leader is in bright sunlight even light 6X tippets might be too readily visible. If there is no wind or ripples the leader will be detected by fish. For that reason shadows and wind aid the fly fisherman. Other aids are floating lines for shallow water. If lake or stream is deep, theu a sinking line might be necessary. Many good lines are made to sink only the last 20 feet Rocket, double or single taper lines can attain leadgreater casting distance, just as can tapered 8 average) is ers. The tragedy came early Friday afternoon when Robert Herds was killed while driving his class C Streamliner in an attempt to qualify for a record run on Saturday. The success of Speed Week was marked by nearly 60 new National speed records that are now on the books in both car and motorcycle categories. This year saw over 450 entries from over most of the U.S. and Canada. Many of the drivers and crews stayed right out on the Salt or in nearby Wendover for the entire week. Top speed of the week, recorded in a Class A Streamliner, was 355.82 mph. Record for the flying mile in this class is 354.33 mph. The car, listed only by number, was a late entry and the name of the driver was not immediately available.
