SH3y y FiiiiuiiiiiHiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimniiniii By HOWARD PEARSON - Deseret News Television Editor For some time now, weve been wondering why performers appear on daytime game shows. They receive minimum pay, they subject themselves to silly tricks and iind themselves in tasteless situations. Yet they continue to show up on Dating Game, Newlywed Game or similar programs. In Hollywood the other day, we found a few answers. Ruth Goldberg, who lines up celebrities for shows pro duced by the Chuck Barris organization,- said the guests are top-rat- e ' , t - paid $163 for one appearance on Dating Game. They will do these shows because theyve found they have fun and they can earn a trip once in awhile, Miss Goldberg said. They dont need the money. One time, Zsa Zsa Gabor came or. the show with diamonds all over her. A frequent guest on Dating Game is Michael Landon, whose weekly paycheck on Bonanza is $13,000 plus fringe benefits. He told us the main interest he has in game shows is to demonstrate to the public that he can be an ad libber, that he need not be tied down to a script all the time as he has been for 11 years with Bonanza. One official at NEC, Landons network, explained .that an actor in Mikes pay bracket sometimes receives a $500 television set for appearing on a show. Through an exchange agreement, he 'does not have to pay tax on this. If he had to pay for one, it would take $5,000 income because of Mikes tax bracket, the official said. Richard K. Shull, writer for TV time, a syndicated columnist, told us he did research on this very subject and found out that many ac"Don't worry about him gettors just want to get away hurt. The Doctors' will be from: the routine of their ting on in 10 minutes." The game usual series. shows provide this break, he explained. 'Also, I found out that some performers who make thou- sands a week receive wily $50 from their business managers. .They must live on this. There is a special satisfaction if an actor being handled this way can go ont and earn something tangible to carry borne as a trophy. Channel Chuckles , A network executive also admitted that having celebrities on the game shows helps those programs as well as the regular one the actors might be on. Although the amount received for appearance on a game show is supposed to be minimum of $165, plus 10 percent for an agent, some celebrities receive more. This is why net-are loathe to discuss pay, one executive admitted. , works . 4 ! However, the game show money enables some performers to stay in the acting business until they land new series of shows, Broadway plays or movies. One such is Connie Hines, who was a regular on Mr. Ed. Since Mr. Ed folded, she said, Ive done lots and lots ; of game shows. There were times when they kept my ca- leer alive. She .'pent a year in New York in connection with a play that never did make Broadway and she could have been declared out of it, but now she is back in Hollywood forking in TV guest roles and in commercials. fSERET NEWS, Dillet, Davidson ; Cavett, Sports Shows 4 John Davidson, talk shows, and sports events highlight TV viewing tonight and early Saturday.
