The human voice and th8 written and spoken word when properly usd have the power to paint pictures, to make an audience forget nil else but the thing being seen end heard at the moment. They even have the power to make a person forget the heat of a summer evening and the fact an auditorium is not air conditioned. This is what happened when four dedicated and talented Salt Lake City actors and equally dedicated and talented musicians presented the first of three performances of River Anthology Spoon Thursday night at Theater 138. The same production is scheduled tonight and Saturday with the curtain going up at 8:30 each night. Its unfortunate that such a work of theatrical art has to be presented in a hall that is not air conditioned. Its to be hoped that someone can find another auditorium for it tor more presentations this summer. For mark this: It is one of the most superb bits of theater reading, drama and music likely to be seen around here this summer. The work is the American classic by Edgar Lee Masters with music added. It was produced for television with Jason Robards in the lead. Great as that was, the local production equals it and in some respects surpasses it. The story, if it can be called a story, takes place in the cemetery of a small town. The dead come back for brief moments to tell how they died or to recite highlights of thpir lives. Their stories become the stories of the small town the frustrations, the hopes; the unhappiness, the Joys; the triumph and the de- humor and Theyll heartaches, theyll find meanness and nobleness and inspiration. Theyll find entertain- ment and moments. Gammer G u r t o ns of a medieval English Needle, farce, will be the next UniverAfternoon sity of Utah Players production, beginning stealing Gammers rooster. Mrs. Hickman, conjuring up all types of women, just goes on and on with her brilliant understanding of theater, with her interpretation of all types of roles. And Mrs. Holt, whether called upon to do a misshapen poet of the town or a lovely wife, moves with ease from one part to another. In short, there is so much good to say about this presentation of Spoon River Anthology that its difficult to know where to stop.
