H t y Friday, July 11, 1969 By SHARON GUSTAVESON Young Americans Special Writer Put a little winter into your summer and discover for yourself the thrills of icing. AU you need is a block of ice, a high and grassy hill, and courage! r and is Icing has more thrills than a packed with fun. There are no bystanders in this sport. Even the ones who merely watch become totally involved in the excitement and action. It is like witnessing a drag race or a basketball game. Cheers are shouted for the winner and sighs are directed towards the loser. Even the courageous, determined, an teens need to prepare for that wild ride down the hill. The feeling is like racing down a giant slippery slide. There are no brakes, but, with care and caution, a safe stop can be executed in the middle of a hill or at the end of the wild ride. Safety points to remember while icing are: 1) Keep a safe distance between each person so that you wont be sliding into the path of others. 2) If you fall, try to roll away from the ice so as not to be hit from behind. 3) Yield to those at the bottom' of the hill and give them time to clear the way before you start down. If you do fail, your ride isnt over yet. You may tumble and roll the rest of the way. An easy and safe roll is the parachute roll. You simply pull your knees up to your chest and wrap your arms about the legs. This way a ball-lik- e shape is formed which makes rolling easier and safer. Icing involves competition, too. It is interesting to see who can make it to the bottom of the hill. Very few accomplish this feat because the slick ice slips out from under the rider without any warning. Frequently riders sit in the middle of a hill watching their blocks of ice finish the run. The first lucky ice jockey to complete the ride, automatically becomes that is until a challenger takes King of the Hill. over the championship! roller-coaste- ff ylarffVVtf - dready-for-actio- ffeii Ml 1 5:! iBfm "m II like to see the tray this huge cube t'fcame from," moans Kathie Hornick.
