Ra In Calm Seas, Stern Still Sags FORT DE FRANCE, Thor TINIQUE (UPI) MARHey- erdahls papyrus boat Ra today was reported holding her own in calmer seas despite a sagging stem which caused waves to break over the craft as far as amidships. Radio reports received in Fort de France said the Ra had covered 48 more nautical miles westward in the past 24 hours despite the hardships and the danger the vessel might be swamped before an escort yacht reaches her side. The motor,, yacht Shenandoah arrived' here from St. Croix to refuel and was leaving later today to rendezvous with the Ra sever--' al hundred miles off the coast. The last position was just under 1,000 miles from Martinique. asked for the Heyerdahl escort vessel primarily to begin filming the Ra at sea ot : but also as a safety measure since the boats emergency life craft was scuttled last week when pieces were used in an unsuccessful attempt to repair the sagging stern. James Hubbard, a cameraman who arrived from Mew York to board the Shenandoah, said the Norwegian expedition leader hoped to take shots of the Ra at sea in its original form before the crew chops papyrus from the high, curving bow and stem tails to bolster the submerged part of the stem. Protesters Pinched : - Six WASHINGTON (UPI) Quakers were arrested in the Pentagon Thursday when they refused to leave its shopping concourse where they were reading from lists of Vietnam dead. Other protesters who staged their demonstration on the steps of the Pentagon were not disturbed. The Pentagon has roped off a section of the steps for demonstrations.
