No, the Parsons werent scouting KU or Bama. Nor were they looking at excess baggage for possible coaches recruits. The head man Ron Nay and assistants Chuck Banker and Jeff Jespersen were learning the ways of big time college football. When Nay was named Ren Nay Westniljster football coach last year, he immediately sought to construct a solid football program. The Parsons were (and still are) without money to develop much of a foot-bo- ll tradition. This hasnt stilled the enthusiasm of Nay nor his assistants. The theory has been one of "make-d- o with what there is. This includes the coaches paying their own way out of their own pocket when circumstances dictate. The excursions to Kansas and Alabama indi cate Nays enthusiasm. "Kansas had the leading offense in tke nation last year, I wanted to see how Pepper Rodgers (KUs coach) did it. . ' ri By JOE ST. We have a quarterback (Ted Thompson) who can run. Kansas has a top fullback, John Riggins. We have Chuck Riley. "Rodgers has a little different philosophy on offense, but our kids are basically like his. We wanted to see how to utilize our kids. Out in this country, one might think a major power like Kansas would laugh off or at least ignore those representing a small school like Westminster. Not so. You cant believe how I was treated, says Nay. "And Alabama was better. . "Alabama is a hard school to visit during spring football So many schools want to watch and learn from Bear Bryant. When the officials there found that Chuck and Jeff paid their own out of their own pockets way they opened the doors. t j "Chuck and Jeff went to Coach Bear Bryants meetings. They went to learn about defense and of course came away impressed. But when they left, the Alabama people said Chuck and Jeff were two of the most dedicated coaches to ever visit Alabama. Nay isnt blowing his own horn . . . or Westministers. Hes giving credit to his staff for willingness to live football, not just coach it four or five hours a day. "Those guys paid their way out of their own pocket. Its something extra to care about coaching and the kids like that, adds Nay.
