The annual payroll is approximately $530,000. Company president Edwin S. Gallacher and Ashby S. Dicker, vice president and secretary, estimate the value of million. Its annual output is valued their plant at between at about $3 million. The operation has always been profitable, Mr. Decker $3-$- 6 The profitability arises in part from the large deposit of argillaceous limestone conveniently piled up by nature in Parleys Canyon. Only one other such deposit is known in the Divisions quarry at Devil's state, the Ideal Cement Slide in Weber Canyon. This particular limestone is a natural blend of the various elements necessary for good Portland cement. Very little has to be added to produce a satisfactory product. Portland cement, incidentally, was so named because it produces similar in appearance to a type" of stone found on tne Isle of Portland off the English coast. "Ours is one cf the most high grade and uniform deposits in the U.S., Mr. Gallacher said. He estimated that the quarry will not be exhausted for another 100 years. THREE TRUCKS The stone is blasted loose at the quarry, run through a preliminary crushing process, then hauled to the plant in trucks that operate around the clock, as does the three plant. At the plant, the rock is distributed by a conveyor system to large bins. Front the bins it goes to a ball mill in which it is refined to dust and mixed with small amounts of CORP. He enlarged the capacity to 30,000 barrels a month by installing a pair of rotary kilns. The Snow family, long prominent in Utah business and industry, acquired the company in 1916, and has operated it since that time. Under tneir management, the plant has undergone three major expansions and modernizations. In 1925, the manufacturing process was switched from dry to wet which meant feeding the materials into the kilns in slurry form. The two kilns were lengthened to 185 feet. A third kiln, 300 feet long, was added in 1958, along with a secondary crusher at the quarry, a scale and appartus to elimifacility at the plant and a nate air pollution. Total cost of these improvements was about 32 million. Also in 1958, the company was reorganized as a Utah corporation. Another 32 million improvement program was undertaken in 1966, which included the rock handling and storage a ne wgrinder, slurry storage tanks and an electronic control center. With the aid of two television cameras,-onman at the control panel can manipulate the entire operation of unloading, storing, grinding and delivering slurry to the kilns. g The equipment also was improved making control almost a hundrde per cent effective, the according to Mr. Gallacher. 125-fo- said. By ARNOLD IRVINE Deseret News Staff Writer British money established the Portland cement Industry in Utah, back in 189G, when a small processing plant was built at 8th South and 6th West. ' Enlarged and improved several times since then, the Portland Cement Co. of Utahs plant still is turning out the gray powder that is so essential to modern civilization. y The Salt Lake plant has furnished cement for construction in an area extending from Denver to San Francisco and from the Montana to the Mexican border.
