Where does it talk about truth? the moderator ' asked. Hands again shot up as the students wasted no time in finding the reference. split-secon- d . This is what we call our scripture chase, explained seminary principal Dean W. Hatch. The purpose of it is to see how fast the students can find various scriptures. We think it a very effective teaching tool. It helps the students learn the scriptures better and it gives them a greater challenge. At the beginning of the contest several weeks ago, each student was given a list of about 50 scriptures, referred to as underlined scriptures, which are used in the chase. The scripture list was taken from throughout the ' Book of Mormon, necessitating each student to do aome study on his own, as the instructors have only covered part of the book in their lessons. The scriptures are those which we feel will do the students the most good throughout their lives, and particularly if they go on missions, continued Mr. Hatch. I like to see how fast I can find the scriptures, said student Pa il Auger. It helps me to know what they mean because I memorize them. - I like the competition, chimed in Dave Nelson. The competition is real fast, and its fun. When the contest first started, Mr. Hatch asked all the questions, but now the students take turn in asking them. Questions are directed to either individual team members or to the team as a whole. Points are subtracted from a team's total for Infractions of the rules, such as beginning the search for a scripture before the question has been completed. The contest has stimulated a lot of interest in the Book of Mormon. We feel the students are becoming familiar with a great many subjects and can talk intelligently about ary of them, Mr. Hatch said. Seminary principal Dean W. Hatch keeps track of points. . Each class is divided into teams, called zones, with six or seven students on each team. The ttams compete against each other for points to determine class standings. Each class, represented by the top five students, compete twice a week during lunch hour in a scripture chase tournament to determine the seminary champions, Mr. Hatch said. -- "It took two months to select the five students from each class, he continued. The students chose who would represent them. The touma- -' (petit will be completed March 3. them-'Bely- es 'Winners will be honored by the seminary faculty In addition, class members will be given a reference book which they can take with them for use during their three remaining years in seminary. - Mr, Hatch said that the program gets the students involved and their response is great. at a tUr.er.
